Just received mine yesterday. It already sounds great with the stock tubes.

Mine is a 220v version with a larger power transformer as a result the chassis is about 3.5" deeper at around 13",in fact it looks like a mini Supra. It has upgraded RCA phonos, headphone jack and output caps.

I've only been listening for around 8hrs but already I'm really impressed. What I've always wanted was an amp that had the 'tubeyness' of the Earmax but with the larger soundstage and tighter more powerful sound of the HP4 and I think this fits the bill.I have only tried it with HP2 phones so far.

BTW I did consider the Supra but from the reviews and comments on Head Fi it seemed the MPX3 would suit my taste better.I think I made the right choice.

Congrats on your new amp. If it follows the same path as my Singlepower amp you are really going to love it after a few weeks of play time. Mine is so much smoother now(200-300 hrs.) than when I got it, and I loved it then. It has really turned into a great combination of smooth, powerful, and detailed sound with both my CDP's. I just got the HP-2's yesterday and will see if I like them over the next couple days.If you get a chance to pick up some Sylvania tubes the VT-231's have worked out good in my amp. Have fun.

I got the impression these amps were like seriously heavy and unless things have been greatly miss-reported that must cost a fortune to ship. However I bet it sounds great. If I didn't already own 3 amps (2 very good ones) I would be tempted as I would love to hear a tube amp. However the bank balance has been a lot happier since I stoped upgrading

I hate you... Why must you taunt me with your brand-spanking-new-going-all-out-no-expense-spared MPX3??? Please go away and never come back...

*Congrats, your MPX3 sounds like a real bad mofo. I bet it cost almost as much as the Supra. Any chance you got some pictures?

It does take several weeks for the large capacitors to fully form. I've really liked the MPX3 when I've heard it. Like the Supra or Supra/SDS, it will respond to the tubes you use (the stock tubes will also break-in over time, and may take a couple of weeks at least before the sound is fully matured). It's going to get even better

Rob, congrats on your purchase, I really hope that you will post your impressions.

Screwy, good luck with the move. I'm moving this weekend, but only a mere 400 miles. I'm considering a Melos, if I ever have the funds...but if you pick up the MPX3, I'd love to read your thoughts.

thanks guys, for keeping my addiction alive

RobN:

Yes, the MPX3 does sound different than the Supra. best of luck with your new amp. Best MPX3 tweak: get rid of the funky R2D2 feet and get a set of Herbie's Audio Lab Tenderfeet (actually Tenderfoot)

Nanhachi:

Joey, good luck with your move and grad school!

Don't worry--you did.

I agree about the feet--my solution was to get Vibrapods.

Hi all,I also think that the feet should be changed

It's really great that you can find someone to make amps with external connections where you want them and internal to suit your budget.

BTW mine has the headphone and RCA jacks in the standard positions.

How about I taunt you some more by saying I haven't tried it yet with my R10 or RS1 phones

I've been listening to this amp all weekend, well into the night and it sounds fantastic (and it's still not fully burnt in).IMO it sits between the HP4 and Earmax in sound quality terms. It's tighter than the Earmax which sounds a little lose in the bass. The treble is similar to the Earmax, warm and smooth.

So you like your HP4 more than the MPX3? Any impressions with your other phones?
