got my first modest mouse album today "the moon & antarctica"

fell in love with it instantly, now would some of the more experienced mm fans point me in the direction to go next album wise???

Any of them really, but moon and antarctica is quite different from the rest of their stuff. Their older music is much less refined and more edgy. Pick up "everywhere and his nasty parlor tricks" if you haven't, I think that's from the same period as moon and antarctica. (really, really good too! disappointing my ass!)

My two favorites are "lonesome crowded west" and "building nothing out of something".

actually this is much older stuff, that was re-released when they were picked up by sony. it was all b-sides from previous vinyl-only releases (mostly from the night on the sun 12"). it's worth it to purchase this album, even if only for night on the sun in my opinion. it's a great track.

most people i know who like modest mouse only like the moon and antarctica. this is the album that has been given props in even stereophile. their older stuff is definitely less refined, but i find myself liking it even more. "the lonesome crowded west" is my favorite album, but "this is a long drive for someone.." and "building nothing out of something" are both great, the latter being a very big collection of b-sides. you can pick any of them up, but don't expect the sound to be quite similar to the moon and antarctica.. just my opinion though.

Thanks for clarifying that. No wonder I like it so much, I tend to like their old stuff the best. I think all the tracks are great, momo just never fails to impress me.

Listened to 'Moon & Antarctica' today and just couldn't get it. It was certainly eclectic and bombastic, but unlike Beck's 'Sea Change', the more intimate moments seem like the sound is being suppressed, like they are waiting to just explode with some bombastic mania. Maybe I'd prefer their older stuff.
