Another Head-Fi Wallet Bites The Dust! Am I Sane? (long)

Nightfall, Way to go! I think it's great you were able to get an amp like this. I'm sure having the money in hand didn't make you smile as much as telling the dealer you wanted the amp. I can't wait for your thoughts on it. Also, what the hell is wrong with macaroni and cheese? I've been on it since I got my cdp. I'll PM you my bulk rate source for it.

Congrats on the superb choice of amps. That ones's going to be able to handle anything you give it. You're going to have a lot of run with it.

Sanity is highly overrated, anyway

ps..If you can stretch your food budget about $5...hot sauce and bacon bits can add variety to your Mac & cheese diet

Mark,

I will survive for a bit with my 963SA, but I have some money owed to me thats coming fairly soon for something I sold to a friend. That will go a long ways towards financing the source before long.
I'm still very eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the modded 555ES. That may be the best direction for the money, I'm thinking, given what I've heard.
And wouldnt it be a shame to have an amp like this and not provide it with a great source?
I'm also looking at a really good deal on the Voodoo Reference interconnects you were so fond of, for the amp.

It's a gorgeous looking amp.

But 40 watts per channel, from a push-pull amp, in class AB? Isn't this amp designed for rather power-hungry speakers, with the headphone jack as a bonus?

John,

Thanks for the gourmet tips on how to spice up the mac and cheese, that cant hurt.

Oh, and the olives too, I dont want to get scurvy!
As for the Bruce concert budget......well, lets say that I plan on spending lots of time with the new amp and the two exceptional Rising concert boots to help me get over the loss! <g>
And I do expect a full report on the shows you will be at!

According to the audiophile source and audio shop owner that I dealt with, no. There are two versions of this amp. The "standard" one has no headphone jack at all. The "Signature" model had an optimally designed headphone jack and and associated direct circuit added to it with the intention of providing outstanding headphone sound. It can certainly provide plenty of power, but the headphone jack is designed no afterthought or bonus.
Smokey, since you own one and are very well versed with it, can you add anything to this?

Ramen Helper:

Black Pepper
White Pepper

if you like it hot:

Red Pepper Flakes

Black Pepper, especially, works well as Macaroni'n'Cheese-helper.

Welcome to Team Beyond Broke.

Don't stay here too long.

I sure hope it comes with at least one set of tubes. That would suck if it didn't.

Nightfall,

The headphone circuit comes directly off of the tube output. No opamps or other stuff to muck up the sound. There is also a switch that changes the amp from 40 watts triode to 80 watts ultralinear, so you can flavor the sound to your liking. It is all point to point wiring, so no circuit board, for what that might be worth. It is indeed an excellent speaker amp, as I've used it with a set of Coincident Super Eclipses to great effect. But it is no slouch in the headphone amp department either. I've always meant to get around to listening to it with my AKG 1000s, but have never made the time. It should be great with these too.

I know, I'm starting to sound like a commercial. But it really is an excellent headphone amp. If I wasn't such a nut I'd have stopped a long time ago with this and been happy.
