Hello all,

Like the title said, I am looking for a pair of closed headphones that have excellent sound but above all, comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time.  I plan on using them for console gaming as well as music and movies on my computer.  Just to give you an idea of my setup, I have an Astro mixamp connected optically to my game consoles to get that simulated dolby sound.  On the back of the mixamp, there is a line in jack that is connected to my sound card in the pc.  The sound card is an Asus XONAR Essence STX and it has a built in headphone amp. I combined the two to minimize clutter on my workstation and only end up using one pair of headphones.  The headphones I have been looking at are:

beyer DT 770
Audio Technica ath-m50
Ultrasone HFI-580 (will consider the 780)

I've heard the m50's and like them but couldn't go past an hour or 2 with them on.  The ear pads became too uncomfortable.  I was leaning towards the dt 770 because of their large velour ear pads.  I have never tried the 580's but heard good things about them.  If you audiophiles have any other headphone suggestions please let me know.  Thanks in advance for your help.

You need to tell us about the sound signature that you prefer.  Based on the cans you are considering, I'm guessing that it is a bass heavy one.

The DT 770 is generally considered  to be one of the most comfortable cans on the market.  However, headphone comfort is a very individual thing.  Sizing and sensitivities are unique to each person.  We can point you to headphones that are generally considered to be comfortable and mention others that have garnered complaints for being uncomfortable.  However, the only way to know for sure is to wear them yourself for a time equivalent to your longest listening session.

I really like the sound of the m50's but the material of the ear pads made my ears sweaty.  The inside also pressed up against the top of my ear. Tried a few mods like the dt 250 ear pads, sock cover, and a piece of coax cable underneath the top part of the earpads but each mod had some kind of trade off with the sound, especially the dt 250 ear pads.

The DT 770 was my next choice but I read here that some people noticed rattling with the 80 ohm version.  Does the 250 ohm present this problem as well?  Dont think ill have any problems driving them since the sound card i have has a built-in headphone amp.
