this morning i was surprised to see the guy sitting across from me wearing etymotics er4 and had a headroom bag (usually i'm surrounded by a sea of streetstyles and stock cans). without thinking i got his attention, removed my er4, and he did the same, and said "nice etys!" he seemed annoyed but said "thanks" anyway. then i realized what a pain it is to reinsert, especially since he was using the flanges--and people seem to always want to know what time it is when i'm wearing mine... i'm tempted to tell them "time to buy a watch!"

maybe we need to agree on a head-fi gang-sign. you know, some kind of hand signal to show solidarity with other members.

Heh that'd be cool...

And we could have bouncers at head-fi meets, and it'd be like, show the secret Head-fi signal or else you can't get into the meet!

Actually it would be cool to be able to identify other head-fi members on the street though...

You're welcome to ask me the time whenever I'm wearing my Etys, I've learned to reseal them with ease! I definitely stop people I see wearing good headphones. The best ones I've seen are Shure E2s and Grado SR60s though.

Just be careful if it's a woman... when she asks what you're doing, saying "Checking out your cans" is NOT the correct answer!

Probably the highest end headphones I've seen around my high school was a Sony V150 (yuck!). Everyone else uses stock/streatstyle 'phones with the volume all the way up so I can hear the distrotion from the other side of the room (it makes me sick to think people do that to a headphone intentionally).

Is there a hierarchy in Headphonedom? One time I was getting off the buss and crossing the street and a guy going the opposite direction had portapros (rare here, but not unheard of). He made eye contact, saw my etys, and looked down at the ground.

Does that mean I was the alpha dog, or that he has ety-envy?

alpha dog?

I'm sure he was ashamed of himself for leaking sound so loud that even made you stuff odd looking earplugs in your ears...

LOL, no, he knew what they were, his eyes rested on the pouch attached to my bag strap that said "etymotic.com" on it, and there was recognition in his eyes that I have yet to see here. I think he had ety-envy.

No, I think he was just ashamed to appear in public with the PortaPros on. If he had Ety-Envy he'd have hit on you to get his hands on your rear, oops gear...
