Micro USB2.0 B and AB mating configurations:
http://www.globalconnectortechnology.com/usb-connectors/micro-usb-2/

"Micro B receptacle accepts Micro-B plug and NOT Micro-A plug. Micro-AB receptacle accepts both Micro-A and Micro-B plugs.

With the introduction of the USB Micro Plug, a new plug receptacle called Micro-AB was also introduced. It can accept either a Micro-A plug or a Micro-B plug.

An OTG product must have a single Micro-AB receptacle and no other USB receptacles [according to the USB specification].

The OTG cable has a Micro-A plug on one side, and a Micro-B plug on the other (it cannot have two plugs of the same type). OTG adds a fifth pin to the standard USB connector, called the ID-pin; the Micro-A plug has the ID pin grounded, while the ID in the Micro-B plug is floating. The device that has a Micro-A plugged in becomes an OTG A-device, and the one that has Micro-B plugged becomes a B-device. The type of the plug inserted is detected by the state of the pin ID."

The USB connector mounted on a USB host or on a USB peripheral is called "receptacle", and the USB connector attached to the cable is called "plug".

Got my Galaxy S4 this morning.

USB audio working with my HeadAmp Pico and RSA Intruder, not working with my Apex Glacier (need to test the Apex Glacier via USB Audio Recorder Pro next).

Hmmm... That's a bit concerning on the Glacier. Wonder what the issue is...

Can someone give me the rundown of how to use USB Audio Recorder Pro? I feel like I must be doing something wrong. I have listed compatible devices, an OTG cable, and get no sound coming from my E17.

I got it working with my E10, but my E10 ONLY works with that app. I don't understand why...
Just select the output and load a song, then press play. Also, it dosen't play MP3.

It’s weird.
I’m wondering what is the SoC of your Galaxy S4: Samsung Exynos 5 Octa or Qualcomm Snapdragon.600.

It should be interesting to compare and analyze Galaxy Note2/Apex Glacier and Galaxy S4/Apex Glacier logcat and dmesg outputs.

A Meizu MX using USB Audio Recorder PRO can work with USB DAC:

"I beta-tested the USB Audio Recorder PRO app with a Meizu MX 4-core and it worked fine with an ODAC, no problem at all."

An Android smartphone using USB Audio Recorder PRO can work with FiiO E17 USB DAC/amp:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/1290#post_9031611
"I successfully tested a FiiO E17 with my stock Galaxy S3 using the USB Audio Recorder PRO app."

Four components to be tested:
Meizu MX >> Micro USB to Standard-A receptacle adapter cable + USB cable provided by Fiio >> FiiO E17

Functional FiiO E17 & functional USB cable ??
Test the E17 with a PC

Functional Meizu MX & functional adapter cable ??
Test the Meizu MX & the adapter cable with a simple USB peripheral like a USB mouse or a USB keyboard

It's the Qualcomm (although with my other Qualcomm handsets the Apex tended to work and the Pico not, just to confuse things).

USB OTG cables:
http://forzaaudioworks.com/en/product.php?id_product=55

USB OTG-capable Android device > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable >> standard USB DAC

"Copper/Silver Series Android LOD made for connecting your Android device through digital out to external DAC. Features FAW custom made, gold plated Micro-B USB plug with OFC copper pins and USB connector of your choice. Check first if your Android device supports digital line out through USB OTG cable. For best ergonomics and orientation of plugs (if they should be inverted or not), write your setup in comment box at the checkout (Android device and external DAC)."

"All my cables work with Android devices like eg, Galaxy S3, HTC One etc. In all of them ID pin is connected to ground to enable digital line out."

. Functional Micro-A plug, i.e. ID pin connected to ground, having the appearance of a Micro-B plug to Standard-B plug cable

those getting the S4 to work with USB DACs

do you have to use USB Audio Pro - or do they work in all programs ? (just like you can assign say bluetooth output to a speaker)

reason I ask is that about 30-40% of my listening is to films, tv programs etc

thanks

I think my use of your picture is covered by fair use, because it is for public interest.
Some fellow forum members are asking about Android & iBasso D-Zero, and a picture is worth a thousand words.
And I did provide a link back to the original picture posted on a public forum.

Anyway, I just remove your picture and your mentioned words from my post.

Works in all the media players, just like it did with my S3/Note 2/Butterfly/XZ.

Actually haven't tried a video player, should work the same there also.

Kind of a bizarro-world concern... pictures on the internet are, uh, pictures on the internet. You probably don't want to post them if you have a problem with the idea that somebody might see them or refer to them elsewhere. JM2C.
