Android phones and USB DACs

Thanks , I messaged him and he said it would be expensive to ship from China than its worth. Surely there is another option for it without resorting to carrying a long cable every time I use it on my phone.

Maybe use standard mini to micro male cable, and short out pins 4 and 5 ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092493

Galaxy S2 doesn't have USB OTG support. It was taken out of the kernel a while ago.

Edit: I see what you're asking. I doubt the feature will be implemented back into the kernel with JB but who knows!

You sir are scaring me.

What does it mean when a device like the DACport LX, works with Audio Recorder Pro, but does not work with kernel USB OTG audio? Who is to blame?

Different USB audio modules developed by different people, different interpretations of the USB protocol, different results!

Who is to blame?

IMO, Samsung developers!
Based on dmesg log outputs, I think they have currently a zero tolerance approach for some not quite USB compliant behaviour of the USB DAC.

Ok, so here is what I think I can do if I understand the Android docs correctly: make a Service that other apps (music players) can 'bind' to, which means they should be able to stream their decoded audio to my 'USB audio service' and the service will then output it to the USB audio device.

The pro's for me are that I don't have to write something that handles playlists and decodes mp3's and I don't have to make fancy graphics that I'm unable to as I'm too techie!
redface.gif

But in this case, other app developers like the Neutron Music player or whatever players you guys are in to must be willing to support this service (as in, they need to make several adjustments to their program in order for it to work).

Any authors here of such player apps or people who have good contact with them that can ask?

Good news from the developer of Neutron Music Player:
http://neutronmp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3163&f=4#p3163

"If some generalized audio output API is provided by developer of USB Audio Recorder Pro then it would be great and Neutron would support it as one of additional output drivers. In the future it also worth trying to develop own USB soft-driver too."

Its hard to get too mad at Samsung, since they are leading even Google in supporting USB OTG. Though they did go out of their way to disable the USB OTG audio on their Note 1.

Its interesting that Audio Recorder PRO, with a more lenient interpretation of the protocol, is able to make it work, with this and several other DACs.

Still I would ask Centrance (maker of DACport LX) and others, to just clean up their act. Its probably just a simple change on their end.

There is an outside chance that Cyanogenmod if they come to support USB OTG audio, could adopt the more lenient protocol, as Audio Recorder PRO did, but of course in the kernel this time, not in user space.

I shared DanBa's helpful post with Centrance. http://centrance.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=410

- What headphones or IEMs will you be using
- Of course it should something on DanBa's list
- How about http://www.leckertonaudio.com/products/ UHA-6S.MKII

I will be using
1. Beyer DT1350
2.hfi2400
3. I don't know what IEM I would be getting , I am in the process of choosing one
Do you have a comparison between the UHA-6S. MK2 with a say S3 or Galaxy note 2  or similarly sized phones?, i want something that is slim and have the same approximate profile as the note 2

Jan 9, 2013 at 8:11 AM Post #1,314 of 9,526
I did  see it , that was one of my original choices so far inin I am considering between
1.Apex Glacier
2. xduuo
3.Venturecraft go dapx
4.UHA-6S.MKII
5. Ibasso D zero
Obviously I want something better sounding than both my in device DAC and the Fiio e17 USB dac , since I would also be using it as my new PC dac
I want something that works out of the box without installing any other apps like the USB audio recorder pro , so far in the venturecraft and xduuo look extremely interesting since they both include cables with their purchase, the venturecraft even more so since they claim it can also function as an iphone /ipod dac

Retrias,

I see you're from Perth. I head back there approx twice a year and the next trip will be in late March some time. I tend to try to get the Perth folks together if possible bringing different gear so that we can sample each other's gear. The VentureCraft products are some of them. Feel free to follow this thread if you're not subscribed to it already.

ergh , I don't think I will be on perth during that time ,  ummm can you get me pictures if I can't make it? obviously I really want to see the go dap or even use it for a bit on my note 2, I will try to make it there, lets hope I can make it though

yeah, I want something that is both an amp and a dac instead of carrying a big stack , I don't think I can carry those kind of things

Hi guys, a quick question. I have a Note 2 and I was looking at the e07k but since it is not confirmed yet I have started to explore other options like the D zero. My question is since the D Zero has no bass or treble boost can I utilize the players EQ (Neutron, Playerpro, etc.) if necessary while using the dac on the D zero? Or does the audio out of the USB to the dac negate the internal EQ? Thanks!

News on Pico DAC & Pico DAC/Amp compatibility with Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S3 (International version)
=======================================================================================

It's been reported that the Pico DAC/Amp doesn't work with the Galaxy Note II or Galaxy S3 (international version) -- except with a powered hub -- but does work just fine with the north american Galaxy S3.

I've acquired a Galaxy Note II to figure out the problem.

Progress has been made and it is working right now.  However, it's likely that a fix will require:
- A small component swap on the Pico circuit board which does not change performance
or possibly
- A custom-made USB cable

I prefer the first solution.  Once a solution is finalized, you may send your Pico to me to have the change made, free of charge, just pay the shipping costs.  New orders will ship with the change already in place .

Those who are 'in charge' of the compatibility lists of phones/DACs feel free to update the info.

So far, like the quad-core Exynos powered Galaxy S III, the new quad-core Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy Note II can work with the FiiO E7, the iBasso D12, Leckerton UHA-6S MKII, the ODAC, … ; had some issue with the HeadAmp Pico (bug fixed by HeadAmp); and doesn’t work with the FiiO E17 using the stock USB audio.

So, in regard to the USB protocol, the behaviour of the Galaxy Note II is likely identical to the behaviour of the Galaxy S III.
