Android phones and USB DACs

This Galaxy S3 (USA version) kernel developer (ktoonsezhas shown an interest in adding USB-OTG support for DAC's so we can use them on CyanogenMOD or AOKP (gingerbread versions).

If you guys go post in his thread and ask for USB-DAC support (don't ask for ETA's) just to show support for the request, he might listen.
I've already let him know I'd donate $50 if he can make it work.  He said he'd look into it (no promises).
He dev's kernels for all USA GS3's I think.

Just to add to my experiences as well:

Galaxy Note 2 I317M:  Stock, no root but unlocked.

FiiO E07k - no go
Behringer UCA202 - works perfectly
FiiO E17 - knew it wasn't going to work and doesn't.  Same symptoms as the E07k.  Device gets registered somehow but playback is mute and fast forwards (skips time).
FiiO E7 - works perfectly but the amp is okay so I got a L9 adapter that has a line out to a FiiO E11.

Funny though, Audio Recorder Pro doesn't work for my device.  It won't pick up any of the above even if it works.

in e07k thread, some1 mentioned that he got the e07k to work on note 2" i317m" with telus stock rom.

OMG I'm not crazy thank god I found this forum.

Moto Razor/M user (they stole my unlimited data and my physical keyboard, I really hate this phone....wish they put the new Maxxes out on time, wasted my upgrade).

So I've been messing with the FiiO E17, considering more expensive units....uggghhh....ok the good news is that I believe Moto Droids have better sound output than an iphone by default, combined with PowerAmp (please lord have them release a PC version....the dumbasses are porting to iphone first....ahhh so dumb they are).

Ok, so I wasted money, my girlfriend doesn't care about how her apple stuff sounds....anybody want an E17?

Seriously with poweramp you can use the preamp to drive high impedance phones and the EQ is incredible.  I wish you could save presets even after you buy it (can u?).

Sorry I can't read 100 pages this site has already taken over my life:

1) What is the state of android amping

2) sounds like you guys are making noise to the right people, what can I do to help?

Thanks,

Droid Rules!!!  I wasn't gonna let itunes take compare of my audio.  Not the way stuff gets tagged.  Really only 3 songs in the new Rihanna album (for example, because of the feat. arists that track is by them so dumb why isn't this fixed? My EAC setup tags correctly).   No need to fuss with finding music, nah just get my droid and browse directories.

You guys rock, thanks for the work and research.  Real nice of FiiO to sell us these paperweights.  .

The ELE EL D01 from the discovery thread works on the international version of the Note 2. Tragically it doesn't work on my original Note running a custom Jellybean ROM.

I dug out my old Acoustic Research TDS202 TDS Sound Enhancement Sound System (http://www.amazon.com/Acoustic-Research-TDS202-Enhancement-1-Speaker/dp/B00005QZ16/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) and included that in the line from my Nexus 10 to the Predator amp. I have not had a lot of time to listen, but it upped the detail and air in the sound. With that in place, I can use the Noozxoide app and get very close again to what I was hearing using the USB Audio Recorder Pro app and the Dacport LX. The Dacport Lx is already very detailed, and using it with the TDS202 almost gets too detailed and analytical. And I really like lots of detail. So I will probably go with the Noozxoide app coming out of the Nexus headphone out and feeding my TDS202 and then my Predator for most listening because that allows me to use Neutron as a music player. It gets old pretty quickly to have to load each song into the USB app and play one song at a time.

But I am hopeful that someday soon, there will be a more robust system for using an external DAC with Android devices, possibly released by Google as part of the next Android version. Then I will be able to play with combining the Noozxoide app and an external DAC, and also probably still use Neutron for playback. We are so close now, but not quite there yet in the convenience factor for me to want to use my external DAC for everyday listening. I will also watch to see what the USB app developer comes up with for convenient playback.

Glad to hear USB Audio Recorder Pro works with the Nexus 10!  I really wanted to go with the N10 this holiday season, but after reading the gsmarena review (and the abysmal distortion measurements), I opted to reject delivery of the nexus tab and to buy an ipad instead.

iOS mostly sucks (particularly when compared to cyanogen), but the ipad's analog circuit measures at least as well as a fiio and nearly as well as an O2, setting aside noise.  For laughs, compare the nexus 7 and 10 in the table below.

In any event, happy to hear that nexus owners still have a way of getting listenable sound from these devices via usb/hdmi.  I had high hopes for the N10 given Samsung's success in putting a good analog circuit in the S3.  This is just an embarrassment though.

Thanks for the link to that review. I do not know how to interpret the figures. Are the distortion numbers really that bad for the Nexus 10 in actual usage? Is this level of distortion something I might be able to hear at moderate listening volume?

I use it almost always with an external amp, so does that change the significance of the numbers they tested? And would it be advantageous to turn down the volume on the headphone out of the Nexus and then make up the volume coming out of my amp (RSA Predator) to possibly reduce the distortion in the output? Any perspective you can offer would be musch appreciated as I am not that technically savvy about some of this stuff.

I am not quite willing to give up the convenience of a music player for the better sound of the external DAC using USB Audio Recorder Pro. It gets old pretty fast to manually load one song at a time. And again, I like some of the effects the Noozxoide app provides and that does not work with the USB app. I do hope to use an external DAC full time sometime soon when this possibility is more convenient to use.

Yes, I am
when
stock Galaxy S3 > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable (Micro-A plug inserted in the S3) >> standard USB DAC >> amp >> headphones

As USB is an asymmetric protocol (i.e. USB host - USB peripheral protocol) and as a standard USB DAC is always a USB peripheral, the Galaxy S3 has to act as a USB host.

The Galaxy S3, an On-The-Go device, acts as
. a USB host when a Micro-A plug (i.e. pin 4 or ID pin connected to the pin 5) is inserted into its Micro-AB receptacle, or
. a USB peripheral when a Micro-B plug (i.e. pin 4 or ID pin not connected to the pin 5) is inserted into its Micro-AB receptacle

To be exhaustive, once a Micro-A plug is inserted in the Galaxy S3 which is then operating in USB host mode, without needing to physically change the cable, the Galaxy S3 can switch to the USB peripheral mode operation
if the other USB participant device requests to become USB host using the Host Negotiation Protocol, or
if a special app, using probably a custom kernel, requests the Galaxy S3 to switch to the USB peripheral role.

Yes, I am
when
stock Galaxy S3 > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable (Micro-A plug inserted in the S3) >> standard USB DAC >> amp >> headphones

As USB is an asymmetric protocol (i.e. USB host - USB peripheral protocol) and as a standard USB DAC is always a USB peripheral, the Galaxy S3 has to act as a USB host.

If I used this USB OTG cable in my S3, would the S3 act as a host or peripheral?

Your S3 should act as a USB host:

Galaxy S3 as USB host > digital USB audio out >> Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter >> Logitech G930 USB receiver as USB peripheral >> radio link >> Logitech G930 headset

Alright, but a bit confused because you said that Micro B would use the S3 as a usb peripheral, and this is a Micro B OTG...

So for my FiiO E07K I would do something like this?
S3 > digital usb audio out > Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter > USB 2.0 to Mini B > Fiio E07K

Galaxy S3 > digital USB audio out >> "Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter " sold by Amazon + USB cable provided by FiiO >> FiiO E07K >> headphones

"3.4 Compliant Cable Assemblies [page 8]
The USB 2.0 specification defines the following cables:
• Standard-A plug to Standard–B plug,
Standard-A plug to Mini-B plug, and
• Captive cable with Standard-A plug.

The Micro-USB specification defines the following additional cables:
• Micro-A plug to Micro-B plug,
Micro-A plug to Standard-A receptacle
• Micro-B plug to Standard-A plug, and
• Hardwired Captive cable with Micro-A plug.  (Hardwired Captive cable is a cable, connected
internally to a device, which is not designed to be removed by the end user of that device.)"

Galaxy S3 > digital USB audio out >> "Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter " + USB cable provided by FiiO >> FiiO E07K >> headphones

Galaxy S3 should act as a USB host (i.e. A-device).
"Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter " = Micro-A plug to Standard-A receptacle cable
USB cable provided by FiiO = Standard-A plug to Mini-B plug cable
FiiO E07K acts always as a USB peripheral (i.e. B-device).
