So far, like the quad-core Exynos powered Galaxy S III, the new quad-core Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy Note II can work with the FiiO E7, the iBasso D12, Leckerton UHA-6S MKII, the ODAC, … ; has some issue with the HeadAmp Pico; and doesn’t work with the FiiO E17 using the stock USB audio.

So, in regard to the USB protocol, the behaviour of the Galaxy Note II is likely identical to the behaviour of the Galaxy S III.

Bold: new addition to the list

Not an HTC phone in sight... Nor an LG...

I wrote to the developer with my suggestion about tapping into the output of a music player like Neutron, and he responded that it would not be possible (or at least not easy) to do something like that. He also said he is still deciding whether to add playlists because of the difficulties that involves. So for now, we are left with the playback limitations. Fortunately the Wolfson DAC in my Nexus 10 is a pretty good DAC and so I am going to focus more on the other ways I have found to improve the sound such as the Noozxoide app. Again, so close to having an easy to use means of adding an external DAC on a much wider range of Android devices, but we are not quite there in terms of user friendliness.

Ideally USB OTG (with DAC recognition) will become a required feature... Samsung has blazed the trail and hopefully other manufacturers will be forced to catch up. But only with new phones.

There are a number of existing phones that do have the right hardware. These lucky owners have 3 options. 1. the Recorder app may add features, though in my email with the dev he was like, this app is about recording. So I'm not sure if or when he'll get it that, there is a new market here and the customer is always right. It will be limiting to have only one piece of software with only one programmer.

2. If Recorder can work on a phone, then the phone has enough hardware to support USB OTG. Ideally Cyanogenmod will come on board and ship a mod for these phones that supports USB OTG in the kernel.

3. There is an outside chance that manufacturers will do (2.). But the sad lesson of history is that manufacturers, even Samsung, even Google, are slow-to-never on back-porting new Android versions to old phones. And for that matter Jelly Bean doesn't seem to require USB OTG support am I right? Maybe we can pray that Key Lime Pie will save us.

USB audio playback is much more popular than USB audio recording & playback.

For the time being, there are 4054 votes for the Android USB audio playback petition started on Jan 22nd 2012 (currently ranked 5 of 27100)
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24614&sort=-stars&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars

and only 2216 votes for the Android USB audio recording & playback petition started on July 31st 2009 (currently ranked 11 of 27100)..

The eXtream solution does audio over the USB without using the USB audio implemented in the Linux kernel (i.e. no need to request Google / Android device manufacturers to implement standard USB audio on USB host-capable Android devices).

If eXtream can do, others can do it too.

A USB audio source code:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page
https://github.com/sgs3/GT-I9300_Kernel/blob/master/sound/usb/card.c#L2
https://github.com/sgs3/GT-I9300_Kernel/tree/master/sound/usb

I’d like eXtream will improve the USB audio playback feature and gain all market share. After all eXtream had the idea first.

It would be nice to add the playlists we have created, but getting 96khz to play, should make my day.
Or enable us to create a root folder  (like the one for recording ) to play our songs (even in subfolders) , and a shuffle function should be prioritized.

I don't need a lot of features in a music player, but the bare minimum would be the ability to load folders and then use shuffle, and to be able to skip a track to the next one if a song comes up on shuffle I don't feel like listening to. Beyond that I can live with bare bones.

Probably not too important in the grand scheme of things, however - I can confirm (as am listening right now) that the Asus Xonar U3 also works with the Galaxy Note 2 with no problems... - Vanilla firmware, no root or otherwise.

Using the "audio recorder pro" app or without?

Dan Ba, with all the wealth of information you're sharing it's a pity you don't own this thread. Have you talked to the mods or consider starting your thread where you can just edit the stop post instead of having to repost every time there's an update? That thread is probably even worth sticky-ing if it's in the correct sub-forum.

Keep up the good work.

Just to add to my experiences as well:

Galaxy Note 2 I317M:  Stock, no root but unlocked.

FiiO E07k - no go
Behringer UCA202 - works perfectly
FiiO E17 - knew it wasn't going to work and doesn't.  Same symptoms as the E07k.  Device gets registered somehow but playback is mute and fast forwards (skips time).
FiiO E7 - works perfectly but the amp is okay so I got a L9 adapter that has a line out to a FiiO E11.

Funny though, Audio Recorder Pro doesn't work for my device.  It won't pick up any of the above even if it works.

stock T-Mobile S3, usb recorder, otg cable and Centrance DacMini worked.  USB recorder would not allow me to change from 24 bit to 16 bit, and was distorted until i switched to 88.2, then back to 44.1 (with red book rips to flac files).  Once i did the juggling, it worked fine and sounded good.  Neutron will not play thru the Centrance, even after using USB recorder to do so during the same "session".

just FYI. Probably means the Dacport would work as well with the same proviso as well.  Hoping the Hifim8 will do the same, if i can get my hands on one.

Posting from time to time is also aimed to bump this thread to the top of the page contributing to create a buzz around Android USB audio.

May be, you should ask eXtream to perform some USB Audio Recorder PRO logging in order to know what is going on between your Galaxy Note 2 and your USB DACs.
