I often use iTunes to import stuff.  Almost everything I have is in ALAC, which Power Amp reads as well as an iPod would.  Of course, Android players can handle FLAC too, which I believe Apple still doesn't support.
 
I can't comment on playlists, because I don't use them.  But being able to freely drop and drag music folders to and from your phone is refreshing when coming from the very restrictive environment of iOS.

 I've been peeking at this thread off and on for the past few weeks while waiting for Jelly Bean to finally come to the ASUS Transformer Prime and anxious to try my Nuforce uDAC (1) to get digital audio out. Well, Jelly Bean hit the Prime today and after a few reboots to make sure the new firmware was settled in, I tried this since I have the keyboard dock which has built in USB OTG. I was saddened when nothing happened. I don't see anywhere to "apply" the audio to an external source, and even tried another posters advice and tried Poweramp, but again I'm not seeing any way to select an audio out different from the built in audio.
 Has anyone else tried getting any USB DAC going with the Prime yet since the Jelly Bean release?

 Thanks DanBa, but your little chart doesn't really do me alot of good. I've seen other posts by you where the chart was shown, so I already know USB audio is now supported by JB. I just have no idea how to tell my tablet to send the audio to the external DAC instead of the internal speakers. Is this just done automatically or do I need a specific player/app that tells the tablet to use a USB DAC? Is there any app to let me test USB audio out?
 Thanks for all your info though. Your posts are the whole reason I even thought about getting digital audio out of my Prime. For me, the Prime just has too low of a volume to be enjoyable, so I want to got with a DAC>Amp. Perhaps it's a problem with the uDAC itself and everything will work with a different DAC.

Your NuForce uDAC is a standard or conventional USB DAC, because it can work with a PC or a Mac: the PC / Mac acts as a USB host, and the standard USB DAC acts as a USB peripheral / client.
 
Like a PC / Mac, a current stock Galaxy S3 running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich can interwork with a standard USB DAC.

At the launch of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google has announced a new type of USB DAC.
An Android-specific USB DAC can’t work with a PC or a Mac; because an Android-specific USB DAC should act as a USB host, and an Android smartphone / tablet should act as a USB peripheral / client.
 

 

A prototype of an Android-specific USB DAC / amp, FiiO E18, will be shown next month.

...or for someone to make a modified kernel that allows it (that mod is done and working on the Nexus 7). You'll need to ask/check at XDA-developers about that.

I haven't really been watching this thread and it's HUGE, so hard to search through (though the search function didn't find anything.) I just wanted to share in case anyone else might find this to be a nice thing, but I just tested my Via VT1620A based Syba SD-AUD20101 with my Samsung Galaxy S3 and it actually works! I fully expected it to utterly fail given that it's not working in my copy of Windows at least without a driver that seems to be relatively hard to even actually get whereas all USB DACs I've tried before just simply worked right off (which made me think at least that it wasn't following basic USB DAC standards.) Interestingly enough, the buttons even worked on the S3. I know it's a super-cheap, super-low quality device on its own, but the neat thing about it is that it has a digital audio output, so instead of using it as a DAC on its own, you can use it as a means to get a digital audio output to another device. Not really very convenient overall, but then a USB DAC attached to a phone never is, lol. I did my own testing with a Fiio D3 (which to my ears at least sounds surprisingly good when connected to my CMoy amp despite the D3's noise floor) and it just pretty much works seamlessly. I didn't really have to configure anything or whatever, I just started my music player (I use PowerAmp) and hit play and the sound was coming out of the SD-AUD20101 automatically.

When I check it on the PC, it's only asking for one unit load (100mA) from the system, so presumably that means it never uses more than that and it likely uses less than that. Even assuming it was 100mA the whole time though, that shouldn't be too harsh on the battery overall and I suspect many USB DACs use a fair bit more. (Of course, whatever you're running it to needs power as well, but that's usually easier to deal with since you don't really want to kill the phone's battery to get an external DAC this way.)

Just thought I'd let people know about this particular option. It's not for everyone, but for anyone who can benefit from an optical output it gives a really cheap and easy way to get it from a device that normally would have no means of a digital output without any hardware modifications. On its own it's not even very big, so it's not actually that inconvenient as far as sticking out of the phone if you have a small hard OTG adapter like mine (rather than one of the cable-style adapters.)
