Android phones and USB DACs

Thanks!

I was wrong!
I only knew UPnP/DLNA streaming and proprietary streaming services like Spotify or Google Play Music.

RavPower Wi-Fi disk:

Well, I wonder if the real trick is the AirStor app.  If it works with a standalone wireless hard drive like the Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB drive, that's exactly what I'd be looking for.  Anyone know any of the thumbdrive-size USB dacs work with the Nexus 5 (or the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1)? I know the dragonfly doesn't.

Thanks a lot. Relief to know that it works both dac and amp on my galaxy s3. Since people say galaxy s3 has to be rooted or something like that to enable usb audio. Now things have been clear, I guess they enabled it in the jellybean update.

The S3 doesn't have to be rooted for USB audio to work, but which DAC it works with can change with the Android version it is running (I'm referring to unrooted stock ROM versions).  My S3 (SGH-i747m) on Android 4.1.2 would not work with a Fiio E17, but it works with E07K.  After they released Android 4.3, my E17 started to work but it broke the E07K.  I never tested the new E18 so I'm not sure which version it works/doesn't work with.  So the android version can affect with DACs it works with.  I have no clue if it works with the JDS C5D, best bet is to ask JDS themselves.

The E18 works with USB Audio (nothing special required) on both version of the S3's Android that you listed. Got them and use them all the time.

The eXtream USB audio soft-driver of the USB Audio Recorder PRO (UARP) / USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP) app can drive the AudioQuest DragonFly.

And the eXtream USB audio soft-driver is interfacing to the Nexus 5's USB Host driver which is able to interwork with the USB controller of a USB DAC.

So the Nexus 5 using UAPP should work with the DragonFly, unless the Nexus 5 can't provide enough power to the DragonFly.

As the Nexus 5 can interwork with the Fiio E17 with requires 500 mA, the maximum power required by a USB DAC; the Nexus 5 using UAPP can very likely work with the DragonFly.

This reasoning is valid if there is no USB audio-related difference between the various versions of DragonFly.

You can also use a portable USB hub and a USB memory stick. I tested this today with an old 2-port hub, Dragonfly, and a 16GB Kingston stick. I tested the power consumption during 7 hours, at home and on a cartrip, and found that it consumes about 250-300mAh (overall power consumption with screen mostly off and no SIM - only WiFi when at home. A larger USB stick might consume more. Whether you can live with this power consumption is dependent on your battery size and how long you want to listen without a need to charge.

Good to know, thanks! Have you tried any full-sized external hard drives with the hub? If so, did they work?

To my knowledge, the AirStor app works specifically with the Ravpower, although I haven't confirmed that for certain (I use all Android devices personally).

Does someone know if new smartphone/tablets have been announced yesterday ay the  MWC 2014 that :

- Support USB Audio out without downsampling
- Has more than 64 Gb of internal memory / Micro-SD slot.

Does Android 4.4 bring some hopes about the Support for USB Audio out without downsampling ?
