My current favorite headphones are Sony MDR V6's, I had them modified with a removeable balanced port. I primarily use them with a Sabaj Da3 DAC/amp, occasionally with a cheap tube amp.

I've had and liked Grado SR80s, and a Fostex t50rp which is currently being made into an Argon. I'd like an analytical, neutral set, preferably closed. My budget is around $300. I've tried an AKG 550, but returned it. I thought it sounded too dry, and not much better than my Sony. I'm trying a Sennheiser HD569, but am fairly disappointed so far - still burning them in.

I'm considering a Sony MDR7520, or AKG 712. Anything else I should consider? Overall, I'd say I love my details and picking up new things in tracks I've heard for years. Thanks.

You might just try sticking with the Fostex T50RP/Argon, for now.

It depends on the size of your ears. The genuine DT-250 velour pads are slightly larger enough that they will fully enclose most ears. Bass is stronger and so are the highs. Careful, though, there are some velour pads out there (Pearstone?) that are smaller than the stock Sony, so the headphone becomes fully on-ear. Sound is not improved in that case, IMHO.

So I found a pair of "used" Sony MDR 7520 on BHPhoto for $175. Long story short, they looked practically new, open box, with one wear mark on the band due to packaging. Only a few hours in, I'm extremely happy so far.

These sound completely different from the V6. Best soundstage I've heard from closed headphones. Also, the bass is ridiculously deep... the mids are not as up front as the V6. Overall a more mellow presentation than the V6, but at least as much detail. I'm worried the V6 may sound congested now.

Right now I'm planning on using these at work, but I'll rotate the Argons and V6 at home.
