I'm not sure if this is possible, but

1. buy refurb ipod from apple.com for ~$200
2. buy 40gb 1.8" drive from newegg.com for $137
3. assemble and have a 40gb ipod for $337

It's pretty tight in there. That 1.8" drive would have to be almost exactly the same as stock in every bump and curve. Besides that, not sure if there's any booting issue with non-standard Toshiba drives.

You should try it!

You can't replace the harddrive inside the iPod. It's been tried and has not worked. I'm sure hundreds of people would have already "modded" their iPods this way if it truly worked. Its not as simple as it sounds. Apple has a software they put on the harddrive that has to be put in there by Apple so putting a different hard drive is not possible.

40gig 1.8" HDDs are thicker, it wont fit in a ipod shell from 10/15gig
