Browsing on a german hifi-board, I found a nice enthusiastically hyped post about this: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/adi/adi2.htm DAC/CAD :P .
RME is renowned for its quality professional products and this is one of them, but the street price is as low as 640$ and it's got nice features such as balanced XLR input and output, 24/196 (Anta) processing, external PSU, a nice clock, Neutrik jacks and ... see for yourself ...
Sure, it may not be pretty but according to that guy it obliterated his 5000 Euro X1S Teac CDP in every sound respect .... soooo maybe there's a music store nearby that'll let you check that thing out. It's got the advantage over the dAck! of being able to function without batteries, it'd be great if this was an alternative to the people who don't want to put up with that

All looks very familiar to the discovery of the M-audio superdac as a nice component with high VFM.
That has been a while ago but the stories are very much the same.
I guess it will indeed be a nice component but not comparable to a non -os dac at all, simply because of the fact that this one does oversample.

P.S. be careful with prices, a lot of them are over inflated especially in hifi, there are always people who will pay crazy money for even the biggest turd even if it's just for status symbol over their peers.
Something that is better then 6 million buck system x says far more about the abilities of system x then of the thing that defeats it, IMO.

Hm .. where does it say it always oversamples?
And hey, I tried to be cautious with my wording. I didn't say you should get it now, but maybe check it out if it lives up to that guy's hype

Oops hehe, maybe I was too harsh with my words, sorry.
"Modern" dacs always use oversampling, I am not an expert in this but I am pretty much certain the dac in the rme does use oversampling.
I hope someone will pick one up and test it...... money's too tight to mention right now, summer holiday and the ack order coming up....

If your looking for an alternative to the dAck! that is based on the same non-os philosophy but doesn't use batteries I would suggest looking at a Scott Nixon TubeDac, it also has the advantage of being even cheaper than a dAck! for a level of sound quality that some seem to think is even better.
