Well, I think I need to find out for myself whether a quality amp/HE6 is good enough compared to a SR-009/totl stat amp.  On the stat front, I'll give Cavalli LL2 a trial; on the speaker amp side, I have a First Watt J2 on the way.  
 
A couple of questions regarding the J2.  Am I correct in assuming that I don't need resistors for this particular amp?  It's a solid state, single-ended, class A 25-watt (8 ohm) amp.  Also, where can I find an XLR-Banana plugs adapter?  I thought about ordering Moon Audio Silver/Black/Blue Dragon with banana plugs, but would prefer to keep costs down and find an adapter to the stock cable in case I decide to return the J2.

Most cable vendors make adapters. Shoot them an email if it isn't in the web store.

I owned a Atma Sphere S-30 MK II for over a year and for a time it was my preferred setup for the HE-6. I used a Audio Research LS26 preamp and DAC7 to feed the Atma Sphere. This combo was very fast and detailed and brought out the best of what the HE-6 does. I decided to scale down my system and get something that fits on my desk so I switched to a Consonance M10S headphone amp which drives the HE-6 well.

i had an m2.  you do not need resistors to protect the amp.

I'm loving my new Icon Audio HP8. Powers them easily on medium gain.

I think the HE-6s are pretty good all-rounders, similar to the TH900s. I reach for the TH900s mostly when I'm listening to EDM stuff. I reach for the HE-6s during bouts of rock, jazz, classical sessions, although they do EDM pretty well too.
 
No preamp for the F1J so wondering if I get a proper pre in front of it (maybe a First Watt pre) if it'll do it even more justice.

It might? are you using the volume on your computer now? Or volume on like a dac?

I'm currently using the PWD's volume but I think there's some tradeoffs (I could be mistaken though).
 
I'm driving the DAC from my PC (Windows 7). I actually pushed the volume on the PWD to 100 (max level). I control the volume on the PC side through through the main Windows volume control. I'm unsure if this is causing me to lost bits in the signal being sent over or if it's acceptable. It sounds ok to me on lower volumes (controlled by Windows volume control) but I haven't done extensive and exhaustive listening to know whether this is the case or not.

Please oh please use the PWD2 volume control.  Anything above 40/100 is lossless.  You even have a remote if reaching with your hand is high effort  Or if you have to use software controls, use the volume in JRiver or Foobar instead of the Windows one.

May I ask why you got rid of the M2?

Sure. I bought with the right to return within the trial period. It was refurbished. The one I had had a bad channel that got worse so I returned it. I did not get it fixed because, while it was real good for the money -- real rich sound with lots of detail -- I think at the attack is not as pronounced as I would like. The amp emphasizes the back end of the notes but sounds a little flat on the front side of notes. I decided to keep the much more expensive solid state (hybrid actually) amp that I already had because it just sounded a lot better. So while it is overkill in a way, I decided to basically keep two speaker smp systems and switch them back and forth between speakers and headphones so I can get some different sound and different times. The M2 is really nice but cannot really compete with the blue circle 204 I had ( nor should it).

If you are thinking about first watt and have not heard the diffenent amps, I recommend talking to the people at Reno hifi. Very helpful on the characteristics of the options and they have a trial period. I would and did pay a little more to get through them so that you have the right to audition.

Thx. Got it. I'm running XLRs to the amp so it's already pretty loud at 40.
