Amping is not helping with portable

No my Millet noticabley improves the sound adding a fullness and "tubey" sound which is better than IMO all of the SS amps I've had the pleasure of listening to. (sr-71 and the headroom desktop with no upgrades or PS...FLAME ON).

So amping a portable does make a difference! Except, you probably need a portable tube amplifier, not a CMOY

Now we are making some progress. I also would like to put in an order for a portable turntable so I can play my favorite vinyls while jogging.

We need a "back to inconvenient but high quality portable sources" movement started here on Head-Fi.

Sometimes they're the same thread in different forums

My cmoy is a work of art all vishay and Elna this and Wima and Silmic that all wraped around a 637 opamp. Most importantly it is silver and very shiny.

My SM3 improved enormously when I changed the case to black

Seriously, although the 627 and 637 are very highly regarded, most people who have done lot's of opamp rolling on the SM3 (myself included) do not find the 627 or 637 to be the best opamps, at least in that amp, mainly because of narrow soundstage and also not as revealing as some opamps or as dynamic as others. For a more tubey sound you might want to try opa 227 or maybe AD 797 ( although I think that is what is in the sr 71 which you don't seem to like).

OK, I am far from an electronic genius, but I may see something here that has not been mentioned (and I do remember much of what I read) . . .

a Cmoy is not buffered
low impedence cans need current
buffered amps increase current

thus, perhaps a buffered amp (aph47, meta42, pimeta, etc) will yield a greater improvement in SQ?

Actually my cmoy is quad buffered with HA-Intersil 5002's. I am begining to think that I have got one or two of the buffers stuck in my ear canal, is this possible?

To me, 627/637, even under class-A, is kind of a machine, though having stunning transparency, detail and impact. AD797's very good, better than 627/637 in smoothness and articulation on high. But the one that combines all the hi-fi excitements and musical fluid is SA5534AN (from On Semi) under Output Bypsss and Class A.

Not to get too much off-topic, but if it has buffers added, is it still considered a Cmoy, or is it now some other variant?

I am sure that my X5 is not packing a 637 however the sonic signature of the headphone out and the amped headphone out to me are identical. Some would argue that the amp is doing its job by disappearing and only providing additional volume. This is a fair point and probebly the most honest statement about portable amps you can make.

My desktop system on the otherhand makes a dramatic difference in sound in terms of making the signature fuller and smoother. I belive that this is what I very inarticulatley refer to as a tubey sound (coloration) which I find very pleasing. My portable amp on the otherhand is perfectly reproducing the sound without adding or subtracting to it. If this is the purpose of portable SS amps thats cool but then we have way overblown expectations for what these amps are supposed to do. In my current experience (not definitive) I am beliving that a portable amp is only useful for increasing volume not improving sound. Is this a fair statement?

You can check it out here http://www.shellbrooklab.com/maxi.htm it is the signature version with a 637 instead of a 627. The name of the product is Maxi Moy so I assumed it was a cmoy varient.
