Hello fellow head-fiers, I purchase a pair of Hifiman HE-400 and plan to purchase HE-500 but want a amp with great synergy and good reviews. I have been looking at Burson HA160, Burson HA160DS, Schiit Lyr and Bifrost, and Schiit Mjolnir. I cannot and do not know which of these amplifiers has the best synergy with the HE-400 and HE-500, and in the future I plan to purchase the LCD-2, so I want a amplifier that will have synergy with it as well. I plan to purchase the amp off of Amazon or Headphone.com since I have gift cards for Amazon and headroom/headphone has got great deals all the time.

So here's what I'm thinking:

Foobar to Bifrost to Burson HA160 to HE400/HE500

Foobar to Burson HA160DS to HE400/HE500

Foobar to Schiit Lyr to HE400/HE500

Foobar to Schiit Mjolnir to HE400/HE500

Which should I go with? Any recommendations are welcome....well...expect Fiio D3 (which I have) and O2 recommendations. I want synergy not simplicity :D

Thanks,

Thomas

Well I own two of the amps in your post, the Lyr and the HA160, so I can only comment on them.

The HE 400/500 sound magical with the Lyr.  Many folks on here say the Lyr is too much for the HE-400s and I disagree, they scale well with ample power. A bit of tube-rolling to your preference and it is just a fantastic combo, liquid mids, thick bass and sweet highs.

The Burson is a bit dry to my ears. I do like it with the D7/5Ks, but with the HE 400/500 the Lyr injects emotion into the music.
