This looks like a job for the boostaroo! It even has three headphone outs. It does fit the bill and is a good splitter, but a miserable amp.

the reason why i want two headphone sockets is that i've tried (i've got a few) splitters, but they seem to take a little bit away from the performance.

are there any splitters anyone would recommend, or is that a benign question?

I think the T1 or T2 is your best option. I know on the T1 you can even shut off one of the HP outs if you are not using it to save battery. I like mine alot. I like it better than the Airhead and its cheaper and smaller.

Yes the T1 or T2, which are both very good portables. The T2 took a nice step forward but the T1 is still fine.
