Although the Fostex HP-A8 is still within the realm of possibilities, I just fell into the Resonessence Concero DAC which I like VERY much and has all that I need.  So now I am on the hunt for a dedicated amp around the $1,000 range. 
 
A couple in mind:
 
Violectric V200
Burson Soloist
 
Any other suggestions to look into within the price range? Or opinions?

I am also reading that the bryston bha-1 works well but i haven't tried it yet.

Just to clarify, you're comparing the conductor to the soloist, correct? or both burson products to the Fostex HP-A8?

I know it sounds unlikely, but I hear only very marginal improvements of the conductor over just the C4 with the phone....with the sl I hear no improvement.....sorry guys.

Well that makes sense given one is a dac on a portable music player and the other is a dedicated DAC

I am considering getting a tube amp for just to mix things up a little.

I've been reading good things about the Auralic Taurus MKII but it's way out of your budget.  You might want to check the Burson Soloist, as I have heard some people are enjoying it with the TH900 but i haven't heard it myself.

What I meant is that upgrading DACs usually only yields subtle changes so your results seem appropriate :-D

What should I concentrate on then to get the best from the 900's?

I've used iPhone 5, HM901 w/ both IEM and Minobox cards, AK120, HPA8, Soloist and Herus to pair w TH900, all sound pretty decent, the HPA8 is so far my favorite. But I'd be happy any setup, other than the phone alone. Now it's permanently hooked up w HP-A8.

I used audio gd master 8 to drive th900 before and sold th900 last week.Under This amp the bass is too much human sound too thin.I heard the best amp for th900 is luxman p1u.
