I am getting a laptop (thinkpad t61) in a few days to use in library or at the coffee shop for study. right now i have denon d2000(i was about to go to hd25 but heard that it was not comfortable). Althou d2000 is good but it just don't block the outside noise that well. What are the good cans that can block the sound and sound good at the same time. I am looking at at most 300?? i guess plus i am willing to spend 100 on amp to connect between my laptop and new can. 400 is the budget after i sell my d2000. I listen to everything. Also have to be able to listen to it for long time. Also looks is pretty important since i am gonna use them in public most of the time. lastly, of course have to be able to drive is with cheap amp. any recommendations???

I am also considering selling the D5000 for the same reason. Is the DT770 better than D5000?

DT770 isolates better and is more sturdy...thats about all it is better at though.

Response to OP: in general, better sounding closed cans in your price range tend to be less isolating. D2000 is one of the better sounding closed cans under $400.
Out of the more isolating you can look at DT770, HD280 (although sound is a huge downgrade), RP-21, RP-22x, ATH-ES7, ATH-ESW9, HFI700, HFI700dvd, Proline 750. I did not list them in any particular order. Some of these also sound very good (esw9, Ultrasones more specifically).

If you could stretch your amp budget just a little, I think you'd be rewarded by getting a combination amp + DAC such as the HeadRoom Total BitHead ($149) and using some relatively easy to drive headphones.

The DT250-80 is a good choice, but the isolation is not a strong point. I think this has at least something to do with the way the earpads are pressed onto the cups--some leakage is inevitable as is the intrusion of external sounds.

Another good choice could be the AKG K271S, which is very durable, rugged and light. For using in public places, they may require some extra self-confidence due to their obtrusive styling. With the stock pleather earpads, I have found their isolation to be deceptively good, especially after having them on for a while and listening to music.

The DT770-80 is also a reasonable choice, with decent isolation. I don't think I would ever pack mine up and use them on the go, but not for concerns about durability. The cord is long and very thick, and outside of a home/stationary listening environment, would be tricky to manage. The DT250-80, with a coiled cord, is very well suited to the listening needs you describe. The AKG's cable is also long, but rather thin and therefore easy to manage. You can also easily replace it with a coiled version from AKG or have a shorter cable made at reasonable cost by, for example, Blue Jeans Cable.

To receive as good as sound as with the D2000, through cheaper cans and an amp, for the same money you payed for D2000, is very hard. Do you have an amp now? My advice would be to spend some money on source and amp instead. You will be less satisfied with the SQ if you downgrade. Is it really worth doing that because of isolation?

thanks for the replies. i can live with this isolation in the library but in starbucks!! those grinding sounds are so loud, well, i guess i can play music louder instead than^^. i currently do not have any sort of amp how is E-MU 02 CardBus Card for my labtop use they look good or is there any other suggestions?? i really prefer something that can be sticked into my laptop, then i do not have to carry three thing. you know d2000 cable is pretty annoying, thanks

How much moneys you gots for thats?

Btw, I used to use HD600 in cafes (I now use ESW9 for the EXACT same purpose as you are looking to, student-status over here :-P). If I can do that, you definitely can live with D2000. Just stay away from the barista.

D2000 sounds good with anything.
At least it does with an amp -- never tried it without an amp.
