Hi. I'm in the process of purchasing an amp for my hd580 and I'd like to ask some questions to the hd580 owners.

1) What amp do you own?
2) Do you hear any additional line hiss caused by the amp?
3) If you would buy an amp again, what would it be?

Thanks

1. Portaphile v2^2 maxxed lt1210/1500BGs, LDII+, SR71
2. Hiss only with the LDII+ at around 85% vol and up
3. PPX3-slam 6SN7 for sure. opamps really don't do them justice. Or construct a beta22

edit: arrg pfkman i'm envious

X-can V3(with Little Pinkie Power Supply)

No hiss

I just got the X-can and the only other amp I considered was the Heed. I decided to go with the X-can because my source is a computer and I thought that the X-can would sound smoother because of the tubes. Not sure if my thinking was logical, but the X-can sounds great and I do not regret the purchase.

a) SP MPX3 SLAM + UPS + automagic heater(tm)
It grabs hold of the HP drivers and has its way with them. The sense of
perfectly controlled power is tangible. I've become so enamored of the amp
that it's embarassing.
2) No.
iii) Same. In a heart beat (and I'm tachycardic ~120bpm)

At work I used them with an XCANv3 and:
2) No.
3) It would be a f($).
if budget > cost any (incl used SP), then that.
else I'd have to look around in my range.

I wouldn't get any amp for the HD580... and if I really had to I'd get a simple but solid distribution amp and put the money I saved into other headphones (or speakers) instead.
If I lived in the US or in another country where a cheap amp builder operates, maybe I'd go for one of those instead.

1. I just have an older Headsave Classic V2 that I bought from a fellow head-fier on the FS forums. It is a small desktop amp with an elpac wall wart. I bought it because the op-amps complemented the HD580 based on research I had done; I can roll the op-amps if I want to experiment; and it was cheap ($125).

It's not the FOTM amp and I'm sure there are folks who will scoff and turn their nose up at it, but I think it sounds great!

By the way, the Headsave Classic was built by the same guy who builds the Go-Vibe line of amps.

2. No hisssssssss...

3. I'd get an older PPA if I had to do it over again....I still may....

1. Berning MicroZOTL; The best amp I ever heard
2. Absolutely dead silent background at any volume level
3. If I can find another used one, I would buy it
