I'm thinking about buying my first amp, but I don't know too much about them.

First of all, is an amp necessary (or beneficial at all) if my headphones are connected to my computer? I use a SigmaTel high definition audio card, if that matters. The headphones I'm buying are the DT880s.

I'm also looking to use the amp with my iPod, as well as my laptop, so I'll be looking for a portable one. Any suggestions?

What is your budget? What are you listening habits? And their are easier to drive Can's than the Beyer's out their. The Beyer's are Great. I have three pair. But need O.K. amplification to get up an' gallop.

I'm looking to spend no more than $200 on the amp.

I wouldn't go with portable amps if you don't need the portable feature. I would look into the Little Dot series of amps (you can find them new on eBay). Look at the ones you like and fit your budget and read some reviews on this site, amps from Little Dot are some of the most popular for starters and has a large supporting community here if you should ever have any problem or questions about those amps.

Welcome to head-fi.

Since your needs are portable. The C&C XO or the MINI BOX E+. The Mini-box would be the better of the two. Try the used market. Your dollar would carry much further. I own the two Chinese offerings. And they offer O.K. performance for the price. Xin amps would be in the range. But the good Dr. takes a while produce and ship. Also something assembled from Rockhopper. The Mini. Haven't played with it. But all reports say it will make noise with you Can's of choice.
Check out Skylabs review of portables. Also many other threads available.
Meiers Audio has neat offerings in your budget. I have a couple of his home amps. They are good performers. TAKE INTO ACCOUNT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
That's an overlooked part of the purchase. You never want it. Till you need it.

HeadRoom's Bithead is also a good choice, especially on the used market, HeadRoom's gear depreciates faster than toilet paper...

Because he is looking for a portable amp, I'd suggest the Mini^3 or Headsix , best value for sub-200$
