Hi I just ordered some Sennheiser Hd 580s. My understanding is that they are very hard to drive and need an amp. My primary sources will be a 40 gb ipod, my stereo system, and my laptop computer. Anyone have any recomendations for a good, portable amp that I could use for those that isnt very expensive (130 or so is what I am trying to limit myself to). I wouldnt mind buying used either. Also while you are here if you have any recomendations for improving the sound from a laptop for around or under 150 USD, that would help too.

Thanks!

Since 580s are 300 ohm cans with decent sensitivity (they're not *that* hard to drive either), a relatively simple amp should do, like a Cmoy variant, a PA2V2 or a GoVibe. Of course something more sophisticated like a PPA or Pimeta can't hurt either. As for the notebook, you'd be looking at either USB based external sound solutions (many available, check Computers-as-Source forum) or PCCard based stuff like the Echo Indigo cards.

I've tried my HD580s with an iPod, and trust me, you won't need an amp. The iPod can drive the HD580 quite well. Also, I used to run my HD580s directly out of my laptop (before I built my monster desktop) and the laptop headphone ouput also drove the HD580 quite well. Honestly, you don't really need an amp. Maybe for better sound quality, but trust me when I say that the HD580 sounds damn good without an amp. So if you're only concern is volume, I'd say pass on the amp for now and save up to buy a nicer amp in the future, should you decide that you really want one.

I researched this not too long ago. The biggest response i got at the time was to get a Pimeta. I waited a few days and found one in the For Sale forums that was used and in your price range. Its by Shellbrook Labs (I dont think they make pimetas anymore) but i would recommend trying to get your hands on one.

If I were you, I'd buy this.

It's a home amp, but really, how often are you going to take the HD580's out with you? Besides, you will get better sound quality out of the Rega compared to most (if not all) portables in that price range.

Good luck with your search.

I too have thought that the 580s can be driven without an amp. I used them through a AV-710 and there is no problem with volume, however, the overall quality of the sound is affected. The bass is muddy and overpowering and some mid detail is lost. Recently i have purchased a PIMETA and now the bass is tighter and cleaner and the overall detail makes a big difference.
I do at times use the 580s straight out of my PCDP or through my Denon HT amp just for a varying sound....but i'd be lost without my headphone amp.

If you decide to get an amp that uses a 9v battery, i'd suggest you look at getting a rechargeable battery and charger (especially for a pimeta),these tend to eat batteries very quickly. I have also noticed an improvement with the sound going from Alkaline to a NiMH battery.

P.S. There are some nice amps for sale atm in the FS forum.

The Rega Ear that Borat mentioned would be a very nice choice for the 580s, if it's still available.
