I have the Gigabyte z87x-ud3h motherboard, and it claims to have a built in amp that can drive 600ohm headphones.  Would this board really be able to drive my dream set of Hifiman HE-400?  Would I still need a DAC?

I've sought help for a closed headphone purchase as i am on a budget that wouldn't allow for an amp/dac that would really do the HE-400 true justice, but if my PC board can really handle these cans, then it's a different story.

Thanks

Motherboard manufacturers make a lot of claims. Plus, it depends in part on your particular listening volumes.

And no. If your motherboard won't drive the loud enough for you, you don't need a DAC. You just need a headphone amp without a DAC to hook to your motherboard headphone output.
