Hello,

After some good advice in another thread, I've decided to get an amp for my AKG K501. This will be used for close listening of acoustic music from my MacBook (lossless files), possibly through a MusicStreamer II dac, which I already have and use for my speaker setup. My budget is up to ~$250, though I wouldn't mind keeping it well below that if possible. My intended use is for transcribing piano from small group jazz recordings, so primary importance is detailed mid-range and instrument separation. I prefer a neutral sound.

I've done some research, and am leaning towards the JDS Objective2, but wanted to get some opinions before pulling the trigger. I was considering the Schiit Magni 2 before I found the O2.

I appreciate any input. Thanks!

I think either option you mentioned above will serve you well in that budget. I've had a pair of k501 for over 10 years, wonderful headphone for acoustic music, they do need an amp behind them, don't need a ton of power but they need more help than most headphone jacks on a computer or portable player can give.

Thanks for responding PM. Do you think the bundled dac would give much improvement on my musicstreamer?

Not really but between a battery that can bloat over time, a DAC, or nothing in there, I'd go with the DAC. Wouldn't hurt to have a back up if you're getting one that has that option anyway.

Just note that you need to have it configured so the RCA jacks will be an input into the O2 section rather than an output from the ODAC.
