I bought the Sennheiser 590 for my TV Movie listening.
The first thing I did was to trace the drivers over the pads with a orange magic marker and cut quarter size holes in the pads.

The drivers are not in the center but up higher in the ear pads.
The holes free the mids and highs quite a bit but the bass is still very present.

The are just great for TV Movie listening and are so very light and very very comfortable.

Then I put some music on and was very pleased with the sound. Great bass, mids and highs with a great sound stage.

I am using the 590 out of my 500 watt stereo receiver headphone jack.

Any other 590 love here?

Oh I bought these used in mint condition barly used for 85.00

I've owned them for a while in the past and am considering picking up a pair again. They were one of the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn, extremely light. Mine had the equinox cable as well. Quite a different sound signature from the 580/600/650; very aggressive and forward sounding, with great bass to boot.

I still have mine - a Head-Fi inspired purchase from over 3 years ago. The Equinox cable really makes a difference. I still think they are the most comfortable headphones. Haven't listened to them in a while and keep waffling between keeping them for sentimental reasons (my first high-end cans) or selling them. Maybe I'll give them a listen tonight.

HI: Please post your thoughts on them after a good listen. Did you cut holes in the pads?

I'm not fond of their sound but they're still the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn.

(never tried them with holes in the pads or aftermkt cable)

Um... actually - I'll be doing no listening to my 590s because it is in pieces. This thread reminded me I had a pair

and I have a pair of DT880 drivers looking for a home. So it is Frankenstein time!

And in case you're curious, the drivers fit well enough that I won't have to make too many modifications. If they come out sounding good, I'm going to have the most comfortable 880s on Head-Fi! Bwahahahahahaha!

Just kidding of course, although I've not tried them myself. As compared to the 580/650 line, does it seem like these are more of a grado upfront? Or just less laid-back than the other Senns?

I liked their comfort. IMO, the sound was a lot less fatiguing than my Grados and more laid back. Very detailed but wasn't as exciting as I'd liked them to be. Can't compare them to the other Senn line as I haven't ever spent any extended time with the 600/580s.

I love my HD590. I guess it just didn't receive so much attention as it was sandwiched between hd580 and hd600. It's easy to drive, and extremely comfortable to wear. The only drawe back is that the middle is a little bit lacking.

I still enjoy mine from time to time. I think they do music like Nine Inch Nails particularly well where the emphasis (for me at least) in the music comes from the bass and the highs. While I definitely agree that the mids are not as good as with the HD580s, I've never understood why people think the 590s so much worse than the 580s - they just sound different to my ears.
