Am I doomed to own the K-701?

Alright, the K-701s I sold are now back. Something happened in transit and the left side cuts out, so the buyer sent them back for a refund.

That's taken care of. So, what now?

Do I fix them and give them another try? Since they have to be opened up, should I recable them with something that will (arguably) improve the sound?

Or maybe someone here has a creative idea of what to do with these.

Give me your best suggestions.

Lol...They just want a chance for you to burn them in so they can get their due appreciation. I hope you'll fix them up and give them another try. I'll bet AKG will take care of it for you.

I hope to listen to some balanced 701s sometime. It seems to improve the sound from what I've read. You'd also need a balanced amp which could be a nice way to check out the SS amp.

Plan A:

Have them bronzed, and hang them from your car's rear view mirror.

Plan B:

1) Move to someplace with cold winters, like Maine or Milwaukee.
2) Quilted down around the headband, fur lining for the ear cups (faux if you prefer)

You'd have a great set of earmuffs.

Plan C:

Buy one of those "Billy Bass" singing fish things that hang on the wall, and mount the 701 around his ears.

The advantage of this last plan is that you won't be able to complain that the 701s don't have enough bass.

I love #2. Upstate NY can be quite cold as well, and I can understand the K701s would be great. Thats one reason I find my Grados to be comfortable all day though (8 hours or so) is my ears don't get at all warm with them.

Wouldn't they be a bit big on a bass?

A bit large, perhaps, but not too heavy. I've heard people say that the 701s are "light on the bass."

These hps won't ever trust you again. You were abusive and ridiculed them incessantly. Giving them a recable is hypocritical and will still only be a redheaded stepchild to the HD800. So just find them a good home and hope they can be rehabilitated.

What have you got to lose by trying the Black Dragon cable ? I know someone who swears that it really did the trick with his K702s - esp in terms of bass impact.

I vote modding them too. Recable would be a nice place to start, haven't seen a whole lot of reviews on balanced K70x's anyways. Also, maybe try the drivers in a different style of enclosure? Maybe Grado mushroom style?
