Okay, I'm 44-years old and about five years ago a young co-worker turned me onto NIN. I plowed through all their albums and I thought "The Downward Spiral" was sort of a minor masterpiece.

Then came "The Fragile" with this brilliant, dark sonic landscape and then these amazing outtakes on "Things Fall Apart" (God, there's one song on that album near the end, I can't recall the title but something with a very "Brave New World"- ish theme, test tube babies or something like that (title, please?) - and that composition just blows me away. I heard that track again last night and its so well arranged and so perfectly accomplished.Brilliant!)

Anyway, like I said, I'm 44 and my friends, even the younger ones in there 20s, look at me like I've got a screw loose when I rave about NIN. They consider them this goth/techno downer, black eye liner band for metal heads. I think NIN is far more than that.

Am I wrong, or is Nine Inch Nail (Trent, I suppose) really one of the great ones?

Yes......Trent is an industrial god.

Besides his Cds he did an amazing sound track for Quake I, creepy as hell. I like angry Trent so of course my favorite Cd is Broken. I also have the "forbidden" video happiness in slavery.

In the 1980's there was Ministry & Skinny Puppy. Later came NIN, Rammstein, Marylyn Manson etc.

nin is one of the greatest bands i've ever been a fan of. without a doubt. he continues to suprise even his biggest fans with how amazing his stuff is.

it's very rare that i find a band whose remixes are worth listening to, but trent's certainly are. i dig "the fragile" remix with the violins.

The Fragile failed commercially, but it's one of the best headphone albums I've ever heard. Amazing.

I agree Trent is pretty brilliant, I've been a fan since Pretty Hate Machine first came out. (If you haven't you must check out Tool as well). I remember seeing Jim Rose Circus Side Show, Marilyn Manson and NIN at Maple Leaf Gardens when I lived in Toronto. It was an amazing concert. Not only is he brilliant in the studio but live he takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. Trent onstage alone behind a screen playing images of dying animals, hanging people, etc... singing "Hurt" was probably one of the most powerful moments I have experienced at a live concert.

Pretty Hate Machine was probably what opened my eyes to electronic music, and I agree that Trent is a modern genius.

I recall the concert in Barrie back in '94 - AMAZING outdoor show, they blow my little 14 yr old mind. It was funny to see the black leather wearing people leaving after NIN encore, and the plaid-shirt & jeans wearing crowd arriving for Soundgarden that was next. I recall PWEI and Manson were opening acts, that was fun.

You must check out Skinny Puppy, Download, and Frontline Assembly, and maybe KMFDM.

Of those bands, I only like Skinny Puppy, which was a favorite of my during the mid to late 80's. I didn't think anyone remembered them.

reznor is a production genius. his songs are a bit overwrought, though.

NIN NIN NIN NIN NIN NIN NIN

I love that video for "march of the pigs" that starts with Chris Vrenna playing a synchopated beat on snare drum and ends with Trent dropping mike, the crushing rythm undulates in waves of aggression........that song kicks ******** ass

That new "Things Fall Apart" DVD is really very cool. I love the huge retangular screens behind the band. Reznor's choice of video definitely shows the band's darker edge, but also a certain aspiration towards high art, which may explain why they don't bore me like so many other bands.

And I forgot to even bring up the fact that I think he now has one of the best rock screams going in the business. A great vocalist on top of it all.

Thanks for the other recommendations, I will check them out.

You know NIN also does two of the best covers I've ever head. Their cover of Queen's "Get Down Make Love" and that Gary Numan cover on "Things Fall Apart" (Track 8) What a great arrangement. It opens with this cheezy 80s synth beat that make you go, "uhn..." then transforms itself into this gorgeous melodic piece that finally dissolves into a jangliing, solo acoustic guitar. What a track!

Yup, NIN all the way. I even broke up with a guy who pronounced Pretty Hate Machine pop-music crap. He just wasn't seeing the "shut up, idiot" warning signals, and was otherwise turning out to be rather shallow. The fact that he didn't get NIN just confirmed the fact that he annoyed the hell out of me.

The Cure, NIN, Depeche Mode - my three in heavy rotation.

For true NIN Fans:

Get the 1994 "march of the pigs" 5 song EP. There is an incredible remix of "reptile" called reptilian done by skinny puppy's Dave Ogilvie.......it is a lumbering skull crushing juggernaut now! (includes godzilla like screeching effect)

Also a short instrumental piece called "violet fluid" very nice.

BTW, does anyone have the "banned" video happiness in slavery or seen it? I have it as part of a 2 tape set of NIN material. It is X rated for sure........

Why yes, I have, it is an excellent video. I can be downloaded off most file sharing networks. It is where I got mine.

On a side note, nin.com is just a NIN logo and the messages boards now. Also, tapeworm.net has recently changed too. So this can only mean one of two things:

1) The NIN site is being redesigned and the tapeworm site is finally going to be launched so at least the Tapeworm CD will finally come out.

Or.

2) In addition to the above, the new NIN is also going to come out.

It should be a wonderful new year coming up.

Darkangel,
Which is the "happiness in Slavery" video? I downloaded very NIN video I could from Kaaza. There were a couple that were unbelieveable. The "banned" video isn't what I call the "meat grinder" video where the man straps himself into the chair that then tears him apart, is it? Oh man, I made the mistake I watching that for the first time alone at 4.30 in the morning...

I can't believe I eyed a used copy of that double VHS set at a record store in LA on and off for three months and never bought it. (It was when I was first getting into NIN). Now I could shoot myself.

I had never seen the "Closer" video either. God, I can see why it didn't go into rotation on MTV, but it was also quite beautiful (however sinister) and there were definitely some visual references that must have scared the television execs! (That little girl must have really unnerved them. I wonder if they caught it as a reference to the work of the painter Balthus? Of course, that opens its own can of worms.)

I'm glad to see others see the depth and beauty of NIN. I was beginning to think I was alone.

Yes, that is the one. Some gruesome mutalations occur before the final grinding. Not sure where this video was intended to be shown, never on MTV for sure.

The two VHS tape set called "closure" has all videos up to 1997 in full unedited versions. There is another that will never show on MTV for the song "sin" where Trent is in huge gyroscope spinning
while video shows other scences of nudity and bizarre behavior.

In between videos there are assorted generic grusome footage scences which are quite distasteful/bizzare, trust me.
