Okay, I've bought a pair of HD-600 again (my third pair). They sound good and I understand why many like them. But, I would like another pair of headphones as an alternative to them.

Thinking of something that has a little more attack and bite in the sound (more entertaining?) The HD-600 is perceived as somewhat restrained and slow in some way (cannot describe it with better words).

I listen alot to Singer/Songwriters, Americana, Indie Folk / Rock / Country and so on.

I have a Chord 2Qute as source and a Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear Diamond Edition headphone amplifier.

What might be a good alternative and fit for my current equipment and musical taste?

Cheers.

Try wearing the HD600 a little tighter for a couple of weeks, and crank it up. Maybe remove the foam on the back of the drivers. If all these don't help...Grado RS1e or Focal Elear.

Check the AKG K712 for clearer bass, bigger soundstage and more sparkle in the treble region.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve read some reviews and just ordered a pair of K712. I will give them a try.

Do they sound a bit fuller and more musical than the orginal K701?

I kind of feeling the same way about the HD600's as you do. Be sure to give your impression of the K712's compared to the HD600's. That would be great.

Yes, the AKG K712 is fuller than the AKG K701, it gives more presence to the midrange and bass, while keeping the upper midrange and treble pretty similar, so they don't have that overly forward nature the K701 has.
AKG K701 is a tricky headphone that works well with a much smaller variety of music.

K701 is already rolling off and already below where 1000hz is at just under 60hz.

K712 has much stronger bass response - goes louder and deeper.

The headphones are being burned in with XLO's Burn-in Tones, mixed with some music.

I will return sometime next week with a review.

My opinion on these phones have changed since I listened to them on a vintage Sony Integrated TA-F5. They now have the bite I thought was missing. My original listening experience was through a Bryston BP-6 pre-amp. This is my only experience with headphones and amps for what it's worth.
