I was pretty keen on trying out this setup once I read about it and saw all the reviews here on Head-fi, but the shipping to Canada is very expensive. Instead of ~$150 (including the sub), it's ~$250 with shipping. And so I'm wondering if there is an alternative that someone may have found suitable for us here in Canada (ie much lower shipping costs). 

I'm looking for a 2.1 setup.

I'd be willing to sell you mine.  I bought two sets, one for office one for work.  The work one is in a box, used only a handful of times.

The Lepai 2020+ can be bought for 25$ + free shipping on amazon.ca.
And you can replace the Dayton B652 with Monoprice bookshelf speakers at amazon.ca. 42$ + free shipping + 20$ duty fees from UPS since it come from the US. The Monoprice speakers are like the B652 in term of quality.
 
Around 87$, add some cable if you don't have them already and it is 100$ for a good starting setup.
