I don't like the pads as they are not deep enough so I put tissue paper around the inside edges to raise the pads. Are there any other pads anyone has tried that give more space between the ear and speaker grille? More comfy perhaps? Velour?

I hated the pads for the same reason as they are ridiculously shallow. The Shure 940 velours fit but for a deep cup and leather/pleather the Brainwavz HM5 pads are a perfect fit for just USD17 per pair free worldwide shipping at mp4nation.net. (I also fit them on my Beyer DT770 and I know they will also fit Denon D2000).
