my stax 404's arrived yesterday, but unfortunately I still have to wait a few weeks for my amp......

just a little rant to blow off some steam while I'm waiting!

fyrfytrhoges paces to and fro, muttering to self:-
...let's see, I've got these old transformers...
...now if I could just find a few batteries...
...car batteries would do it...
...about 20 car batteries is all I need...

I can very well imagine how hard the wait is... Pity you have no Stax amp to compare the KGSS with! I wonder how much better than the current Stax line it sounds. Anyway, I'm curious about your findings. BTW: how much is the KGSS and where do you get it from?

I'm taking grinch's word on this one, I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the kgss. I haven't read any complaints about it around here. I have the tube experience already, just not with the electrostats, and I have to say I prefer the tubeage there over the ss, but I've heard and read that with electrostats it's different. we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

fyrfytrhoges,

You are gonna LOVE those Stax combined with the KGSS. Man, oh man, are you in for a serious treat. I was really amazed at how good at how the 404s sounded when I first plugged them into the amp. Next you'll have to get the Omega IIs to see just how much better they are than the 404s......

yeah, i was planning on going omega's right off, but on advice from another stax lover i decided to go with the 404's first, then take the plunge, maybe around Christmas, we'll see.

Good for you! I also got the 404s first, then thought that they were incredible and that the Omega IIs couldn't be THAT much better. Right? Wong! They are simply stunning and really have something quite special about their sound that I have never heard in anything else to date. Maybe it is the KGSS and zzz's mods to the power supply, but I really don't care. They ended any and all thoughts of changing anything in my system short of some cabling to ensure I get the most from the Stax I got.

SiE, yeah, I figure this will be my last and greatest upgrade and that my system will be pretty much complete, except for a big time source (cdp) somewhere down the line, then possibly a DAC somewhere down the line, oh my, didn't I just get done saying I was done, this place truely is hell on earth. this forum be damned!
