IMO the old stuff is better, but to each their own.

The old has very epic soundtracks indeed. How could I forget Frank Klepacki's old-school Command and Conquer music?

Its just that not many game soundtracks get yngwie malmsteen (iirc) to play/write them.

That's about the only use there is for that overrated guitarist that sounds like he's playing the same riffs at the same speed over and over and over again.... like video game music

.

Doom or Quake would be the one that defined the genre IMO

Don't forget Yasunori Mitsuda's work on Chrono Trigger. Particularly on the last piece of the game/OST. Truly beautiful piece and IMO one of the finest in video game history.

As opposed to the definition of the genre.

Games vary too heavily to have a single game's soundtrack define game music in general, in my opinion at least. I'd have to say that DOOM had one of the best for an action game in the midi era, but that doesn't mean it defines games in general, because its application would be useless in a horror style game, even if that game was a shooter itself.

Alternative Rock.

Doesn't seem to fit the bill since it came out over a decade into the genre.

This is more accurate, IMO
Or quake, doom, Ut2k4.
FF6-9

A lot of jpop is cheesy or over the top (which I like to an extent), but the older stuff is quite sensible, and First Love is a great sensible album with R&B influence.
It's also recorded well

Definitely more accurate, Chrono Trigger's music, and also Chrono Chross's music was great, so was Final Fantasy VII's. It's unfortunate that Chrono Chross the game wasn't so awesome.

Chicane's Behind the Sun is the epitome of Ambient/Chill

That's odd. Chrono Cross is widely considered one of the top 3 RPGs on the PSX (arguably the 2nd or even the best console for JRPGs). Although, if you were expecting a chrono trigger 2.0, then I can see why you were disappointed.

You could only level on boss fights. DOUBLE YOU TEE EFF.

The game was alright, and had a lot of amazing elements, but I strongly disagree with the top 3 part.

Can anyone tackle psytrance?
I've got infected mushroom - the gathering (or classical mushroom)
hallucinogen - twisted (or lone derranger)
Pleiadians - IFO

... cant decide which ones are the 'best' and which ones the 'definitive'

Same deal with j-core.
Future sight and Trois Rouge are probably my favourite, but they're a bit late to be definitive.
