I think I figured it out. (I hope so anyway). There was a bit of plastic or something stuck in the little slot here. I used an exacto blade to get it out. Thankfully I have this magnifier at my job or I would have never even seen it.
Has anyone else had any issues with the cable connection on their N5005? I repeatedly have the right channel cutting out. I've tried detaching and reattaching but it doesn't help. Visually it looks fine...at least I see nothing wrong. I am going to try the balanced cable but I'm waiting on a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. Any tips?
Unfortunately, that's the biggest flaw of an otherwise brilliant-sounding iem! A cable switch may be hazardous to the earphone's health. If you can find these gems for $299 now, it is worth the risk! For me, I keep the Bluetooth cable on mine to make the ultimate wireless earphone. I think mine is over three years old and is still going!
Update: after cleaning the mystery stuff from the connector, the cutting out problem was improved but not eliminated. I remembered these have the Bluetooth adapter so I tried it (I had never used it) and there is no connection issue at all with it, so it is definitely the cable that is the problem.
I think I may contact Harman to see if they’ll replace the cable. I had such a hard time with their customer service a while back (my post is up there somewhere) that I am not at all confident that they’ll cooperate.
There is a reason why these are discounted 75% - they never took off...
So don't feel too bad about this.
Check out Yanyin Canon - currently can be had for 320$, sometime during sales goes below 300$.

They never took off because they are overpriced at MSRP. Don't get me wrong--I love them, but how many units could a company possibly expect to sell at $1000? Maybe the k3003 sold very well at or near MSRP but that was, what, 2011? The high-end iem market is congested (as it was in 2018 when these were new), to put it lightly.
Update on my cable woes: I contacted Harman and they are sending me a new cable, free of charge. Nice!!! It will be even nicer when it arrives.

I don't remember the market being flooded with 1000$ IEMs in 2018 - at least not from mass market brands such as AKG.
Even today, $500+ are mostly from niche players, and are not sold in electronics stores, only in dedicated audio stores.

I own a pair already and would love a second spare pair at that price. I paid a £719 during a promo when they were released and still ok with that. I have quite a few iems but I think these are pretty special, as long as you get a perfect matching tip. $299 would be amazing even €299 would be fine, cmon Harman!
Update: Harman sent me a new cable and my problems are solved. The old cable really looked perfect and had never been yanked on or pinched, but it definitely had a short or something.
I'm really pleased that they took care of it and made it so easy. Good job Harman!
I bought a pair at the $250 sale price and they showed up today. I've been listening to them for a few hours now and I'm impressed! Thanks again to everyone who linked to the sale.
