Well, RazorDog, who I bought these from (and bought my N40 from) messaged me today and said in final testing before shipping they found a defect. They are now going to ship me a brand new pair instead but won't ship til next week. Total price shipped is $698. What a steal.

To me they look identical in size, except the depth of the cap. meaning the chrome cap on the N40 and ceramic cap on the N5005. The N5005 look deeper. .. I saw other images too which showed the other side of the N5005, and they looked the same as N40 to me. ... Of course I can't be 100% sure. I know it was also said just in the last page or so, that the N5005 are bigger and a slightly different fit. However I have my fingers crossed about the N5005 fitting me because the N40 do perfectly..

I have the 3003, 5005 & N40; if you have any specific questions just ask away. I think the 5005 is slightly bigger and more comfortable than the n40.

Picked up a pair of N5005s a couple of days ago.
Extremely pleased with these when using them with a a chord mojo.

I prefer them overall to my ER4XR, EX1000, FX850, FW01 and Fiio HF5.

Not a fan of the sound when using the bluetooth adapter but no big deal.

Super nice sounding IEMs and I haven't even tried the other filters yet! (still on the reference ones at the moment)

came to the same conclusion as you in regards to the BT cable, used it once or twice and havent touched it since. I then stumbled across the Ear Studio ES100 and decided to get one, and it's exactly what I was hoping the N5005 BT cable would be.
So I ended up using the N5005 + ES100 + Note 9 for commuting and the N5005 + DX200 at work. The ES100 works great as a BT solution for the N5005, quality is good enough for commuting imo, only thing I really miss with that setup is a high volume, but I tend to listen pretty loud sometimes so I guess this wont be an issue for most.

Please does anyone know if the cables from the N40 work on the N5005, and vice-versa?
I don't have the N5 yet but had the N40 and those are standard MMCX. As far as I've read, the N5 are propietary MMCX so standard won't work.

Good to know as my Note 9 and ES100 is my main rig. Can't wait for my N5 to come in.

So this is a bit more complicated than I imagined!

The N5005 cables have a small set of bumps around the base of the piece that inserts into the headphone that the n40s don't have.

the N40s DO work with the 5005 cables (but they don't seem to seat 100%) still worked and sounded fine, but you could see a small gap. using the BT cable I made the n40s wireless with no problem.

But because of the lack of bumps on the n40 cable, the n40 cable doesn't work on the 5005 headphone ( it never clicks to engage).

hope this helps!

Thank you, @Lurk650 and @AKGunkie
I think I was hoping for the obvious, e.g. to be able to use the balanced cable with N40. I have a Sony ZX300 with a balanced (and SE) headphone port. They say it sounds much better out of the balanced port. However I would not take N5005 with me, as I would use them only at home. I might take the balanced cable with the N40 though.

People have pointed me toward balanced cables, but as yet I have not seen a cable that I felt I would buy. The cables that folk suggested were probably very good too, it's just that it's all new to me.

I think that I am really pining to buy the N5005. I am so taken with the N40 for portable and home use. I imagine the N5005 are just a good step better. Possibly very considerably better. There is a £500 price increase, but the N5005 seems to specialise more in accessories, and I wonder if that's where the cost is. The pro-reviews of N5005 are a fraction mixed, so that doesn't help. I know I'd love some TOTL head-phones/ear-phones. It's totally on my list of things to do. I imagine I will finally settle with both good in-ears, and some over ears. With regard to in-ears, it's whether I trust my impressions of the N40 and reviews or not. I'd be busted up, if I felt like the N5005 wasn't a large a step up as I hoped.

It's hard to judge from my perspective of never having heard TOTL headphones though. It's nearly impossible to gauge how much better, that equipment can be. Like I originally had a Mojo, and bought a Hugo 2. The Hugo 2 was better in ways that I hadn't even imagined.

I was hoping to audition the N5005, but as yet have not found a store to do it at. Plus there is no surety that store will have run the headphones in, but they will say they have. Minefield!

If you just simply want a balanced cable for the N40, for a reasonable price that has 4.4, then I believe Penon would have you covered

I think I was interested to get a balanced option for my ZX300. Also to be able to share cables would have been good. I was thinking if I lost one cable from my N40, I would down to my last cable. If I had the N40 and N5005, and lost one cable, I would still have three cables. ... No worries. Looking for a balanced cable option is something I ought to do.

I have noticed that it's possible through Amazon to buy the N5005 through overseas purchase with Amazon com. They are a bit cheaper than on Amazon UK. (I am in the UK.) The listing clearly states that the item on Amazon com is a US version of the N5005. I went googling, but can not see any difference between an UE (UK) set, and a US set.

Does anyone know the best/easiest way to swap out the cable? I seem to have to pull the cable with all my might from the IEM, that can't be right.

Don't have 5005, but MMCX shouldn't take any strength/pulling at all- just pinch with your fingernails into opposite sides between the cable and the iem casing and should pop out without trouble -perhaps the recessed socket on 5005 complicates this?

Thanks Raketen I did try that, but no luck, I think the recessed socket may make it overly difficult.

It's annoying as I'd like to go BT for my commute and then wired for my desk dac/amp at work, but currently it's so tight that I fear breaking the cable or worse the IEM .

Just got them yesterday, just tested removing and yes they do take a bit of work to remove. That's good and bad. Grab the shell and squeeze the connector at the base close to shell and pull.

On that note, I can find no faults at all with the sound of these.

I agree, they sound fantastic. My only concern is the difficulty swapping cables and finding a replacement cable when the stock one inevitably breaks.
