So glad I skipped a few steps on the audiophile ladder and went straight to these bad boys... picked 'em up from Amazon for $220 a couple months back.

With all these $300+ headphones it's amazing that the Q701 is only $235. Probably the best deal for a headphone ever.
Even the build quality is amazing. How often do you hear about a Q701/K702 falling apart or breaking? Almost never..

I highly doubt they're killing it off. It's one of their best sounding headphones along with the K601.
Maybe they're stopping production on specific colors?

If they do discontinue it, it's going to be a stupid move for AKG I think.

The fact that it's a good value could be why they'd want to kill it to replace it with something more expensive since Senn and Beyer are playing the price ladder game.  Or they could be announcing a whole new lineup, I know they were discussing a K1000 replacement several months ago.   Maybe they'll introduce a new tier 2 flagship with it.   But I doubt it highly.  I suspect it's just a dealer/distributor thing.

Well IMHO the Q701 is one of the best bang for the buck headphones out there (along with the Senn HD598). I'd like to think they would stick with a winner-and, like tdock said, "even the build quality is amazing".

I wish Q701 had a good value in Europe. Also there are no official local distributors  available where i live so shipping is needed. DT880 is cheaper than Q701 by ~80$ at amazon.co.uk while at amazon.com Q701 is cheaper than dt880 by ~70$. Got DT880 250ohm premium by about 100$ less than i could get Q701 :frowning2:

In Croatia Q701 cost 420€,  while you can get DT880 or DT990 600ohm permium for as low as 240€. And not to even talk about HD650's, which are over 500€. Fcked up prices...

The Q701 fails to produce a center image for me; every sound is left or right.  Vocals never feel as if they are right in front of me, resulting in a bizarre sound signature.  The 598 is the exact opposite.  The 598 sounds more like a closed headphone; every sound is middle centered.  The AD700 has perfect sound positioning; vocals are centered while all other sounds surround me.  The AD700 is extremely 3D and nothing ever gets in the way of the vocals.

The Q701 has more sub bass than the AD700; however, the Q701 sounds much more anemic in the low end than the AD700 sounds.  The first half of "Raise Your Weapon" by deadmau5 illustrates this extremely well.  The AD700 has more of the low sounds I want to hear.  The Q701 has the banal thumps while missing out on the important harmonies and melodies in the low end.

The AD700's lack of detail is very noticeable but I am currently trailing the higher-end Audio Technicas (AD900 now and AD900x soon) to abate this shortcoming.  However, I consider sound signature and positioning much more important than detail.  I find the Q701 to be unlistenable because of its outlandish sound presentation.

I find that on the proper source and amp the Q701 has holographic imaging that is stable and multi-layered. Beats the pants off the HD650 in this regard.

just got my Q701s in the mail from Amazon. I paid $230, but they're made in china :frowning2: - I can't really fault the build quality or stitching, so I guess it's not really a problem. Now the 100hr burn in process begins...
