AKG portable headphone Project

This is my plan:

I have a pair of AKG K 81 portable cans. I know they are not reference grade and a little bass heavy but they block out sound well, can be driven by my portable gadgets w/o an amp, and do a decent job at reproducing sound.

What I want to do is put a 3.5 male plug just below the Y split in the cable. Then make a few different sizes of female to male cables.

I just don't know where to get the items. I you have any ideas where to get the items or about the project I'd love to hear them.

I really need to figure out how to make these work. I stripped the wire and one side has loose copper and a silver looking wire in it, the other side has loose copper and a red wire. What do I need to do to put the cable back together? I'm looking at just shortening the cable rather than inserting plugs and jacks.

Well, the "loose copper" sounds like a shield, and is the - wire for each side. These will get tied together for the sleeve or ground on the connector. The silver and red wires are the + wires for each side. L+ goes to the tip of a mini plug, and R+ goes to the ring (between the tip and the sleeve). These wires (red and silver) may have varnish on them which needs to be stripped off before you can solder them... a lighter should do it. Spend a bit of time figuring out your connector and how to do a good job in providing a strain relief for the wire so it doesn't pull apart.

Here's the thread you need, and what I was thinking of when I posted the gallery link before. This is a tutorial with pictures for making an interconnect. What you're doing is basically making half of an interconnect. This is what I was pointed to when I needed to do the same thing and it helps much better than just words.
