AKG new headphone K545?
Jan 5, 2014 at 8:18 AM Post #781 of 1,753
I'm very tempted to buy these as I'm looking for something to compliment my V Moda M100's. Found someone who is willing to sell these for about $225 unopened in box.

Could someone tell if these are indeed a nice addition to a M100 headphone and in what way do they compare favorably to the V Moda's? Also, is it easy to find more comfortable earpads for the 545 as I've read about some issues with the pads?

you can get it for $200 here: http://www.razordogaudio.com/collections/frontpage/products/akg-k545-closed-back-over-the-ear-headphone-turquoise

$50 off with discount code: RAZORDOG50

Perhaps, I should've mentioned that I live in Europe, so shipping would basically negate the discount ... not to mention customs being a pain in the ass. Thanks for the suggestion though.

They sell for 250 euro here, or $340

Has anyone found a good case for these? I was getting ready to go to Russia and had just purchased the 550; for the life of me, I couldn't find a case that worked on short notice. Is there the same problem with these? I almost think for the occasional traveler it might be worth keeping the packaging....? It it small enough to fit in a backpack?

I would say jump on them at that price then

I have not heard the M100 but do own the M80. From what I have read and what I know about Vmoda. I would expect the K545 to not have as much bass but better mids and treble and possibly a bigger sound stage. So they will offer a nice alternative for you.

If the pads bother you, you can buy the Brainwavz HM5 pads from MP4Nation. I would try the originals though as they are pretty comfortable if they fit.

I've owned the V-Moda M100 and the AKG K550 (not the newer k545), and I personally preferred the K550s. From people here on this thread the k545 is bassier than the K550, so I imagine the k545's sound signature is right in-between the M100 & the K550. I personally could see a slightly bassier k550 replacing the m100 for me if the sound quality is similar to the k550 because after trying the k550, you definitely notice the recessed mids of the m100. I imagine that it would be a good pair of headphones for listening to non-bass-heavy tracks (edm, rap) if you are trying to complement the m100s :)

imo ymmv

Darn, they have the k545 at a best buy near me, but they don't have them on display to try on :frowning2: So now I have to decide on either momentum or k545 without having tried the k545. I know it depends on my personal sound preferences, but, would you go with the k545 or the sennheiser momentum's given the choice?

k545 for me... and the momentum was my favorite of all time until I heard the k545.

here is what it does better:
better soundstage
better instrument separation
better scalability
better clarity
similar bass
better treble extension
better imaging

The momentum has a more warm sound in the mids but not by much. The k545 to me is an overall better hp easily

k545 is more comfortable and in my opinion sounds better. I would agree with grizzlybeast's list of what the K545 does better.

man... I just got the x3 in and it pairs reallllly well with the akg k545... the bass boosts perfectly without ANY distortion.

the combo is also showing my bad quality mp3's

I've contemplated getting an x3, good to know that!

Just got the E09K (went ahead and ordered it last week) in tonight and fired it up with the E17 in place... damn damn damn! These phones sound good with that combo.

They sounded really good with the E17, however out of this E09K there is more muscle, bringing these phones to life that much more. Running the potentiometer at about 10:00 o'clock, louder but with the detail still there, anything more is massively loud. I know these are 32 ohm cans, but wanted to give the E09k a shot anyway. Leaves the option open for higher impedance down the road...

As a newcomer to the audiophile world here I still don't have an amp. So would you still say the akg k545 sounds better un-amped compared to the momentum? The momentum is only 18ohms which I know is low, but is 32ohms still low enough to be un-amped?
I also wasn't very impressed with the momentum's isolation, is the k545 better in this aspect?

I ordered the Momentum and K545 last week to make my choice. I returned the Momentum without hesitation. I also prefer the k545 than the k550 and the Nad Viso. Yep, k545 is really great (and I have tried some other headphones before). It is fairly neutral without missing too low, and not tiring. Great soundstage and natural sounding.
The only thing I have against him is the lack of clamping, not much better than the k550, shame.
