Hi

I posted about a week ago regarding buying some headphones to listen to mainly dance / trance type music with a budget of around £100 (so I guess about $200).

Anyway I went for the Grado SR80's in the end but am not sure if they are really what I am looking for. They are very detailed and open sounding and I am particulary impressed by their pace. However they do not have enough bass (though what they do have is very good), it just doesnt really go lower enough.

Currently thinking of maybe selling the Grados and trying either the AKG's or the Sennheisers. Problem is there are no shops around where I live to give them a try so sort of buying blind (after doing quite a bit of research around these forums).

The AKG's currently sell for around £45 in the UK (the Sennheisers £120) so a big difference in price. I guess what I am wondering is are the Sennheisers really worth the extra money?

Of course if anyone has any alternate recommendations then that would be much appreciated.

Why don't you try the ultrasone hfi-580s. The 780s get a lot of raves around here recently and the 580 is based on the flagship ed9 model just like the 680 and 780. The 580 have larger drivers and more sensitivity than the 680s and 780s and they are recommended as drummer/bassplayer/dj headphones. They retail for 200 dollars so you can probably get them for less including shipping from a good online store

Hey, did you try the Grado Basshead mod?
Just grab some tape and put it on the side of the pad, in my case the HD414 pads. The bass will be impressive, trust me

Here's a pic how I did mine

Thanks for both those suggestions. No I havent tried modding the Grados - might have a go later.

The ultrasones sound interesting - havent come across these before. Just having a look at availability in the UK and can't seem to find them.

The only ones I can find are Ultrasone PROLine 550's for £100 and 650s for £125.

Is there any difference between these and the Hi-Fi ones?

There is a massive ultrasone thread and an ultrasone 780 thread that you can check out.

Basically, the prolines are supposedly more analytical with a slightly more recessed midrange than the new hfi model 780 which is based on the ed9 design. The 780's are said to be more engaging and fun sounding. That said, the 580 and 780 are both based on the same design but the 580 is more sensitive and has bigger drivers 50mm vs 40mm for the 780.

Have you considered the Audio Technica ES7?

HD25-1s leave the K81DJ way behind in my opinion. The Sennheisers are a lot more expensive but worth the money. The K81DJ is somewhat muddy as an earlier poster stated and I found them to be extremely uncomfortable i.e. head-clamp. The Sennheisers aren't perfectly comfortable but are much, much better than the AKG. The SQ of the Sennheisers is excellent, crisp and clear but not sterile. As well the Sennheisers can take a lot of abuse without breaking. An excellent portable can all around.

cheers

True to that. I got the HD 25-1 now, and simply LOVE the detail in it. And with an amp it sounds even sweeter. So if you like the K81DJ, you will love the HD 25-1. Yeah. It's worth the money.
