Look forward to hearing your impressions of the resulting handiwork. Imagine if you could rewire and mod it to be balanced...

For balanced - would need to get rid of the connector and hard wire - it only has 3 pins. Fortunately or not, I do not need this as my current and future amp is 2A3 single ended triode.

PRICE REDUCTION AT AMAZON UK - AKG812 PRO

These headphones have been reduced overnight.from £1,018 to £843.25p, a further saving of £175 on their price of yesterday.  I have just ordered a set.
There are 10 left with more on the way.  I don't know how long they will remain at that price.  I rather think they were in the region of £1,050.00p a week ago

im actually getting the second K812 balanced mod in the world. Couldn't be more pumped to share when it's done in a few weeks. It's possible though.

Oh wow, hope it looks decent, I heard it's really really hard. Good luck!

It looks indistinguishable. I'll post more once he makes the mod public, but aesthetically it's just a matter of swapping the jack out.

Did anybody noticed the dreadful measurements of the the new Dharma headphone.
Strangely, everybody seems to rave about those and nobody blinked an eye at the measurements.
I still remember when all the people, most of them not having heard the K812, were crying out loud...

i auditioned the k812 before i saw the thd measurements which confirmed what i'd heard - just saying. haven't heard the dharma tho.

That 's exactly the interesting thing. Like you, many people reported hearing the high THD but in the case of the Dharma, none of the "experts" seem to have noticed it.
you can forget about the Dharma then. You 've just saved yourself $1200.

i'd like to give the dharma a fair hearing first.

to clarify my opinion of the k812 - it didn't sound as clean as the hd800 when i compared them. turns out that the hd800 has significantly lower thd particularly in the treble region according to innerfidelity's measurements.

Maybe I'm raving, but...

In the last months, all this new products were announced/released

- Sennheiser HD800S
- Hifiman Edition-X
- Beyerdynamic T1 Gen 2

Very strong and updated competition for the K812, maybe AKG will release a newer model or an updated K812 correcting all the aspects that users didn't liked (with a balanced connection, more controlled treble, etc)

Who knows, but seems pretty logical to me...

EDIT: don't forget that AKG is a massive company, with 2600 employees and owned by Harman, so they have all the money and resources possible to exceed expectactions with a new flagship product.

They also only sold FIFTY (50) pairs of their flagship product last year. So that kind of cuts both ways as far as improving it/doing nothing with it. From what I've been told they don't want to modify the K812 at all because they so rigidly believe in its design and sound despite the low sales and critical opinions.

I'm hopefully that the balanced mod I'm having done will remedy the treble issue altogether, but that may be wishful thinking on my part. This is my first flagship headphone that I've purchased, and I'm very satisfied, so my opinion may be of little value to others.

Don't think that's going to happen... Balanced is of no interest to studio applications (in contrast to symmetrical audio interconnects between electronic devices using XLR) and th y won't revise a rather new product. How long was the time frame between HD800 and HD800S or T1 and T1.2? 5-6 years as far as I remember...

Where did you get that number? Are you talking about 2014 or 2015? I know about 15 units sold by a direct contact of mine, and that was just in Austria...

I misspoke. They didn't have more than one company sell more than 50 pairs last year (2014). Their reach is MUCH smaller than that of Sennheiser and the HD800 was my point. And yet despite that smaller reach and more resources, they won't budge on the design. I don't want to put anything more specific than that out in the public domain, but AKG doesn't seem to care that the response to the K812 has been luke warm.
