no matter what source i plug into my AKG are louder on the left earpiece, i know its not my hearing cause when i wear the headphones backwards it becomes louder in the right channel.

its becomes more pronounced in bass heavy music.

Yeah, something is wrong with the wiring connection probably. Either go for a DIY recable or send it back to AKG to have it fixed.

I found the same with my old pair, actually (the left side). I just assumed I'd damaged my hearing, or something.

They don't repair them. They trash them and send you a new pair. They stock two parts for the K81, the ear pads and the 1/8 to 1/4 adapter.
