Hi is my first time ever buying headphones, purpose purely for gaming.
is the AKG K712pro or beyer dynamic dt990 pro better for gaming?
if so is there a newer version of it?

current setup is TEAC (Ah01 usb dac-amplifier) with Elac speakers.

I have K712 Pro but I prefer my Sennheiser HD 595 in all situations, including gaming. You should also consider Sennheiser HD 599 too. It's extremely comfortable and its soundstage is good for gaming. My K712 Pro makes my head hurt after a while (its sound characteristics maybe part of it but the headband thingy doesn't work that well in my case), while I can wear my HD 595 all day.

Get an open Audio Technica. They are much better for gaming. Massive soundstages. The Sennheiser HD800 as well. The DT 990 has a lot of bass and might bleed into detail a bit... like blurring footsteps a bit for pinpointing the enemy. They are better for listening to music frankly. I've never heard an AKG K712 so can't comment on the size and detail of the soundstage. You really want an OPEN headphone with lots of treble energy and unbloated bass (light) for gaming.

I highly recommend the Audio Technica AD700x (I had the original AD700) but they sound the same from what I have read.

It is comfortable, has super wide soundstage, and bass light with sparkly treble which helps picking up footsteps etc. in games.

I also previously owned the AKG K712 but sold it immediately as the top band made my head hurt after 10 mins.

Out of all headphones I have owned, the AD700 is still the one that impressed me the most considering how much it gave for the price. (For reference, I have owned/own AD700, AKG K712, ATH-R70x, ATH-AD2000x and Sennheiser HD800).

Personally I don't think you would get a wider soundstage than the AD700 until you hit headphones in the $1k+ mark.

I have the ATH-AD900X, which I think are nearly identical to the AD700X, and they are great for the price.

As someone who owns almost all the cans mentioned here, this is my 2 cents. The K712 Pro would compete with the AD1000X more than the DT990. But, I'd say the K712 Pro > DT990 but the DT1990 > K712 Pro. For gaming only, I would recommend AD700X. The K712 Pro and the AD1000X would be better for all-around headphones that can gaming with the best of them, and the AD700X would be for strictly gaming. If you ask me the best or one of the best "gaming headsets" is the Audio Technica ATH-ADG1X but it's a $300 AD700X. Basically, the only difference is a $200 dollar mic if you think about it. AMS has used ones on sale for $200 though and they let you make payments too.
