AKG k702....Possible regret?

Go solid state, anything OTL tube will just be a plain risk.... Any of the popular and capable <$400 amps will do really.

I used to have the same feeling of regret like you when i first got the K702 as well, the sound was really tinny and the high was piercing, after about 100 hours of burn in, the high settled down and bass revealed, everything started to come in place as the more you play it. As of right now, i'm really happy with my 702 with no more regret, kinda refer it over my Kenwood KH-K1000

. About the amp, i currently own a Little Dot Mk.III tubes amp pair with zero DAC, the amp does a good job as it expands the soundstage, refines the bass and gives a warm tubes sound to the "coldness" nature of the phones. I bought the amp for around $250 new so it was a good investment to me and i would definitely recommend it.

I'm catching them in Irvine, Ca. I know I'm only 22, but I share your guys excitement in finally getting to see the Camera Eye live. Can't wait to see Moving Pictures in its entirety.

Nice...another generation of RUSH fans! They are awesome live. They are as good now as they were when I first saw them back in the early-mid 80s!

Agreed. I've tried them with many tube amps and found I always kept coming back to SS amps with them (and I usually always prefer tubes).

Maybe it's just me, but I've seen Rush get mentioned a lot more lately in pop culture. I think a lot of people are really starting to show their love for them. I went to their Hollywood Star ceremony recently, and it was really neat to see so many fans. Some of them came from around the world.

Me and my friends got into them in middleschool when we were 12. At the time Limp Bizkit and Nickelback were all the rage. And at least for my generation, at that age you only really listened to what was on the radio. So it was kind of a reaction to that. Like: really..that's the best music out there? Then we started getting into bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles (obvious choices). But something about Rush really struck a chord with me, and I got hooked. I used to get money from my parents for lunch, and I would pocket that every week and go buy one Rush CD a week (back when people bought CDs).  I devoured through their entire discog.

Yeah I know, side rant.

Great taste in music! Might I suggest you look into Pink Floyd?

BTW: Nickelback : another great Canadian band (highest selling band from 2000 to 2010 that wasn't named The Beatles

). Now if the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would smarten the heck up and put RUSH in!

FCOL, Abba? and not the boys from Toronto? Is there a Canadian conspiracy  (maybe not, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen are in), but come on!

Sorry for the detour to your thread!

I've been all up and down the music spectrum by now. Yes, I know most of Pink Floyd's albums by heart. :) I actually have an original Animals (French Pressing) pink vinyl. I kind of have ADHD with music. I listen to a lot of different genres, and am always moving around.

I went through a phase where I only dabbled in mostly older bands. But in the past four years or so (ironically when I went to college) I started to get into a lot of newer bands, especially in the indie scene.

How is the LDIII a hybrid? Isn't it a OTL tube amp?

The MkIII is most defintely not a hybrid.

they lack bass and are tinny sounding .... is balanced b22 decent enough ?

My stock Woo 6se must be better than a balanced b22 then (with K701's) because they sound FAR from tinny or lack bass.

Linus, I'd definitely hold onto the 702 for a while and see what you think. They retain most of their value for a long time, especially since you bought at a significantly discounted price.

It will be fascinating to compare with your 600. Please keep us informed as you explore the pair. I wish I had a set of good Senns myself but will take others' advice and squelch my impulse to spend, LOL.

I've had my new 702 for about a month now. Hard to say whether the burn-in (now well over 300 hours since i kept them listening to classical radio round the clock for a couple weeks) makes much of a difference. I'm not listening to the same music (classical radio), or comparing other phones. One or both of those comparison criteria would be the only way to get even a good subjective opinion, unless you had very high-tech analytic gear. My impression of my perceptions will change subtly over time. I found it even changed in a short period when I attended a local head-fi can jam a few months ago.

I was very impressed with the 702 right out of the box, didn't perceive bass weakness as some here do. The amp and the type of music you listen to will be important factors.

RIght now my two amps are a Yamaha receiver (headphone jack for the tuner) and a Presonus hp4 which is cheap (<$100 on Ebay) and has 4 phone outputs -- convenient if you have more than one headphone. I have to crank the hp4's volume knob most of the way around to power the 702 so it is probably underpowered, still sounds not bad at all. I am waiting for parts for a DIY Sjostrom Audio QRV07 amp, which will probably have plenty of power and I am anxious to compare the two amps on this issue of power importance for these cans.  Do-It-Yourself is probably the cheapest way to get a high-powered amp, if you have the time and assembly expertise. I don't have either so I will turn the pieces over to a professional assembly shop when I get them all.

Funny, because I found them to be at times thin and bass lite with the Woo6, Woo3, and my MAD Ear+HD. I preferred the SS Total Bithead to them. I just couldn't get into them with tubes (and I'm a "tube guy"). Are you EQing your K702s?

Being relatively low impedance cans, they really need current (not voltage) to drive them properly and the B22 can do that better than most tube amps.
