AKG K701's with iAudio X5L ?

Sorry if covered somewhere else but I am about to purchase these headphones, and I am wondering if they will play OK with the X5l unamped, or am I spending a lot of money for nothing.

I tried 701's with my X5L at a meet both amped and unamped. Soundwise, I much preferred it amped...but it was "serviceable" straight up. It was definitely not as loud as my Grados out of the head-out.

You can get decent output from the X5 but you will be cranking the volume level up. Much better amped though/
