After deploying the K701 upon one's music collection one will find that many once enjoyed recordings are in fact "garbage" and can be done away with once and for all. Forget that you may have enjoyed those recordings with previous equipment. The previous equipment was wrong.

In a way...yes..not meant for badly recorded music. That is what High Fidelity is all about - faithfullness to the original. Ignorance is bliss when it comes to the audio hobby. Generally, the higher up you go in equipment quality (more transparent), the more demanding on the source material the rest of the chain is.

Except the K701 only weeds out recordings and equipment that have a somewhat tipped up top end. Oddly, recordings that are dull or have too much bass on other equipment suddenly sound "correct" with the K701. If it's faithful to the original then a bass-heavy recording should sound that way on them. But it doesn't.

As others have stated here, a warmer tube amp makes a good match with these phones. It's all about matching components. But when you try and tell me the K701 is actually "neutral" I have to disagree.

The K701/2 are not flat, but they are well balanced...

Yes, I agree that the 701s are not perfect, what audio component is?
And I do agree that component matching is important too but the upstream anxillary equipment should not significantly change what is the basic character of the headphones.

I have to politely disagree with your assertion that dull recordings will suddenly sound "correct" on them - not from my experience with them.

if you think akg is bright. then you will find grado rs1 harm to you ears.
then i would suggest give the hd650/600 a try.
they are not bright at all. specialy the hd650 so dull.

you can't beat the SSL sound

The unique sound of Solid State Logic’s 4000 Series analogue mixing consoles is sought after worldwide. Engineers of pop and rock music, broadcast transmissions and television post-production value the SSL 4000’s flexible dynamics chain as much as the trademark SSL “punchy” sound. Waves and SSL engineers have worked together for over a year to
recreate the sound characteristics of the classic SSL 4000 Series E and G Series consoles. Now, those who “mix in the box” can achieve the sound they thought they’d lost when they moved to the digital world.

I just warmed up the k701 by tuning down the annoying low treble anomaly that it has. I did that by changing the tube of my mhdt havana dac from a bendix 2c51 to a Western Electric 396A. Besides that... I suggest burning them in 1000000000000000 hours. If that fails then buy a dark and dull amp. If you really dont care for them at all to begin with just replace them. They are not accurate cans IMO. cymbals don't sound as real as they do on the senns but I really like them from the bass to the mids. The senns are bloated and blurred in comparison.

how to recable a k701???

Email James at Stefan AudioArt; he can answer that for you. You can also check with Drew at Moon Audio. I had Richard Land of Land Audio install the Equinox on my old K701. It was $75 plus shipping both ways and the cable.
Here's a simpler way: sell K701 and buy K702 because K702 has detachable cable - no need for the surgery which will void your warranty.

Listening to the phones now, I don't find them too bright at all, and agree with my original opinion that you'd be better off finding a set of phones you enjoy.

I just watched Dark Knight on DVD and had audio running to my K701 through the P-51 Mustangs. All I can say is "wow"! If you haven't tried watching movies with these cans, you must! Dialogs, music, action are all so balanced and separated. Never had to increase volume to hear the dialogs.

^K701s seem to be pretty good movie phones in my experience.
