Been reading a few posts on the HD650 versus K701, i have the HD650 and wondering wether to sell out and swap for the K701. I listen to music from people like Jack Johnson and Amy Whinehouse, to Dire Straights and dance music. And even Jenkins (classical) i like it all

.

I prefer tight controlled bass with authority over more bass thats not as good, and i prefer crisper treble (aslong as its not harsh or painfull) and a nice enjoyable midrange.

So as a finall verdict before i make my decision, stick with my Senns or go with the AKG's...?

There have to be 100 threads on this subject.

I was also stuck with this problem before I purchase my K701. Basically, the feel and the detail in the high's was the reason why I picked the K701 over the HD650. In my opinion, the HD650 was lacking some detail that K701 couldn't reproduce. And especially for classical and jazz, that is very important. However, the K701 bass is very weak, but when there is bass, it's really good quality bass. I use the GS-1000 for bass.

The trick with either headphone is to use a sufficiently powerful amp. Using a portable is like driving on flat tires then whining about the car not being very fast. Either the HD-650 or the K-701 are capable of giving you what you want. But both headphones will disappoint with an insufficient amp.

For what it's worth, I prefer my HD-650 to my K-701.

the bass on the K701 is par. but the midrange is very good and the highs - not bright to me, at all - and detail are nice as well. both headphones are very good. i would get the K701, experiment with it for a while, and then take it from there.

To me the HD 650 is organic; no other word to describe them.

As for the K701, it's too airy to a point where no instrument has any weight to it, and that just ruins the experience for me.

Have you consider Beyerdynamic DT990 (the 2006 edition)?
I like them more than HD650 (too "dark") and K701 (too "lightweight").
I find DT990 (the latest edition) to be the most musical headphones
- atfer RS1 of course.

The soundstage is fuller than both HD650
("3 blobs") or K701 (very wide but flat). The DT990's mids are on
par with HD650 (ok, HD650's mids are a bit more "silky").
BTW, the DT990 are also a bit more detailed than K701.

I second that. I have the same impressions about HD650 and K701.
Of the two I still prefer HD650. But recently I find myself using DT990
the most.

IMHO the cans for you are neither 650 nor 701 but the Denons (2000/5000).They have good bass, crispy treble and a nice midrange.

If you do not have an amp with some real power then my advice is to go for the Ergo 2 rather than either the K701 or HD650.

Tight bass, crisp treble and midrange?

Probably Grado or Alessandro

For the kind of music you're describing, I personally IMMENSELY prefer the wide soundstage and wonderful mids of the K701. That being said, a lot of the alternatives people have mentioned are worth checking out as well. I really think you should try and get to a meet before you make these decisions based on the opinions of others. If this is absolutely not an option, again, my personal opinion is go with the K701, hands down.
