Is there anyone who owns or has heard both AKG K601 or K612 and Fostex T20rp or T40rp or T50rp? I just listened fostex T20rp mk3 for a while on stock form and they sound nice except the exaggerated bass on voice/speech. I'm not sure if I liked them for its sound or because they're open headphones. This is the first time I've heard open headphones. What I look for is flat and detailed sound. Crinacle has given a high score to K612 pro so I consider buying it. I can buy t20rp Mk2 for 110 USD new or I can buy K612 pro for 200 usd new. Which one would you prefer? I'll drive them both with LG v20 in high impedance mode.

No offense, but every headphone you just cited sucks. The K612 is a poor substitute for the K701 and its family. The original K701 was one of the three best headphones in the world about 15 years ago. However, it always suffered from being bass-light. On the other hand, the outstanding detail and soundstage were magnificent, probably better than the other two headphones it competed against (Beyer DT-880 and Sennheiser HD600).

Years of modifications later to bring bass to the K701 family have only resulted in a lack of detail and a smaller soundstage. (I've listened to all of them, and owned most at one time or another.) The K601 (K612, etc.) was always a poor substitute to all of that.

As for the Fostex T20/40/50rp, they are the most modded headphones probably in the history of headphones. Entire companies have sprung up doing nothing but modding the Fostex planar headphones into some kind of different headphone. So, does that mean it's a great headphone? NO. Out of the box, a Fostex T50rp is one of the worst sounding headphones on the market. The drivers, yes, have a lot of potential and for a while, were the only planar drivers regularly available. That still doesn't do away with the fact that out of the box, the Fostex T50rp sucks big time. A pair of Koss KSC75s ($15?) sound like a pair of Focal Utopias by comparison to a Fostex T50rp.

Thanks a lot for your long reply. Well , I'll consider buying an old k701 if I can find. In fact I have a K240 sextett that I only listened with a poor on-board soundcard connected to a speaker amp. My amp is strong enough and I can never go more than 1/3 of the dial but my source sucks. However that amp still makes a lot of difference to bass, very tight and controlled however lacking sub bass frequencies and weight. So I'd like to ask if old k701 had a frequency response similar to the one of sextett.

What about the K712?
