The price was too good to refuse really, so i've done it and they are on the way. Fingers crossed the Yamaha can work it's magic, otherwise its a bit of an amp scavenge, may have to begin scouring the head-fi classifieds for the very occasional UK seller, or wait ages untill the next meet. Cheers.

Recieved the AKG 612 today, initial impressions...we're gonna need a bigger amp.
I'll let it burn in, but for music the sound hasn't wowed me like i'd hoped (attached to my Yamaha rxv475 playing flac)

Battlefield 4 sounded good though, i'll be patient and try and find a second hand amp on ebay or second hand here.

Check to make sure that your RX-V475 isn't applying digital processing. That could certainly muck with the sound a bit on music.

Do you mean put it on "straight" or "direct" mode instead of the various DSP Music & Movie or Surround decode?

How would you guys compare the bass extension of the K612 to the Senn HD 600? I'm more concerned with which stays flatter and has less roll off into the low/sub bass rather than which headphone has boomier bass.

Seriously?  The HD600 I had in the past went down to 15Hz easily without much roll-off.  You could feel all that subsonic rumble with movies and some albums.  My current HD650 goes down to 16Hz.

The K612 does go down very low, same with the K712, I get a sense of sub bass presence I rarely experience with headphones. The AKGs(especially the K712) when well driven honestly have better bass than the Senns(tighter, faster, more detailed, and interestingly just as impactful or more so when driven right), the AKGs tend run into trouble in the upper mids and treble though and it becomes a special balancing act with the system to get the upper ranges right. An AKG with the right synergy is something special though, sadly my system isn't very synergetic for my K712 or the K612, but it does love the HD 650. It's only recently I've come to fully realize just how picky the AKGs really are.

Has anyone put a balanced cable on their 601's?

Right now I'm having a problem with the original cord disconnecting.

I'm wondering if this is possible and how it changed the 601's?

Check out this listing on ebay - its a good amp for the money.

And no, I'm not the one selling it. I did email with the seller though and he responded quickly.

Hello,

I bought K612 two weeks ago and now they are burned in and they sound very natural nad open. I drive it on my notebook, yamaha reciever ar pioneer amp. No crazy ear destroying bass, but a clean one. Mids and highs - great! AKG  - you made a great Overear open headphone!
