AKG K501 love...

I also think something is fishy with the article on Headfonia. I have tried the pads from my k701 on the k501 and think that, although there are certain differences, the sound is not necessarily worse compared with the stock pads. I doubt that k601 pads could make such a "dramatic" difference,

I just recievied my 501's today and I want to replace the ear pads, but they are $30.00+ a piece.  Are there different options or i'm stuck paying that much for them?

In UK, the k501 pads cost $10+ a piece:

Yeah I looked into that, they are $11.50 a piece + $30.00 to ship to the US.

There has to be other options.

Did you contact AKG directly? Give them a call. The last time I was looking for AKG parts I called their office in the US (I think Rodriguez was the guy's last name? can't remember) and he was very helpful with pulling up part numbers to the things I was looking for. Unfortunately K501/601/701 pads are going to be very expensive due to the way they attach to the cups.

AKG no longer stocks them.  Thanks for the idea.

??

I just received a set of K501 earpads (PN 2458M0404) from AKG USA in Northridge California. They were $19 for the pair and about $8 for Fedex shipping to me here in SoCal. I ordered them via the phone (818-920-3279) about 5 days ago, so that should be a pretty accurate price.

@beatfreak if you can't get ahold of someone there, I found the email for the AKG parts guy I contacted to get K601/701 pads and some various K240 parts:
frank.rodriguez@harman.com

@tdogzthmn I can't give you a direct comparison since I've never heard the K501 but from what I've read, the K500 sounds pretty much identical to the K501 as it used the same drivers (and maybe baffles too?) at one point or another. It's been a while since I've done any reading on the K500, though, so my memory is fuzzy.

Man, I really wish I could say I love the K501 as much as others, but the honeymoon has kind of ended for me. I certainly like them, and they do a lot of things well, but more and more I've realized that the mids just don't live up to the hype.

Do you prefer the K501 or K601?

I liked the K501, but it's soundstage was so massive. Once I got my Q701 though I sold the K501 and kept the K601.
I kind of prefer the K601 to the K501, but it's just preferences. K601 is a bit warmer too.

I hate to see what the going rate is now for a used K501. Maybe $300?

Yeah, I think I prefer the K601, too, though it has been a while since I heard it. I do remember the mids being a lot more pleasant, with shouty-ness only coming through with certain female vocalists. With these, they are shouty with a good number of vocalists, both male and female. I've even EQ'd the upper-mid region down, and they can still be shouty.

$300 is the going rate I've been seeing, which is crazy since just about a year ago I was seeing them go for $150. Maybe David Mahler's 'Battle Of The Flagships' thread revitalized interest in them?

With demand for them being so high I wonder if I could get someone to trade me their Z1000s. I've been wanting to try those for some time.
