I am of the firm opinion that bass is highly overrated. This is why I love the DT880 so much, as it is completely recording dependant.
I jut might have to snag a pair of 501's. I just recently started listening to a bit more Jazz.

Then again, there is that problem of the 701's looming right over my head urging me to buy them.

I also like the k501 for jazz and classical too. I think the bass bette reflects what concert bass sounds like. The wide sound stage also helps me better position and separate instruments. And as for the midrange, they're AKG cans so you know what that means.

It's not just a little tad bit wider. A LOT wider. Or my ears are broken. Of course, Sennheisers have as much depth if not more depth. But width AKGS have

HD580/600 soundstage is really not that big in the scheme of things... I used to think it was one of the biggest soundstages around, but it's not the case. In fact it's on the narrow side if you compare it to several other high end headphones.

I've always heard that the DT880 soundstage is wider than the Sennheiser.

I'll throw some luvv to the K501 too. There alot of K501 haters out there due to their "lack" of bass. However i find it tight, fast and accurate. Damn good headphone. Very impressed.

interesting, I have the 501s and 601s in front of me.
these are quick 1 minute impressions out of the box.

both cans exhibit a lovely sound,
501s have a front row in your face sound stage that is wide but flat,
601s have distant sound stage, a treble more recessed then the 501's and larger bass presence.

burning in as I type.

my woodied hd 600s still have the superior sound stage at the moment in terms of natural representation having both depth and width.

How's the comfort? As I understand the two phones have different pad material, with the 601's being softer.

How is the bass depth on these phones? I think a lower bass quantity is forgivable, but I like good bass depth.
